In the 90’s, there was one name synonymous with trigger-happy, twitch-reflex shooters: Cliff Bleszinski. Bleszinski, better known by his online handle Cliffy B, played a vital role in crafting the popular Unreal Tournament series for Epic Games, which emphasized big guns and even bigger explosions of gore. Cliffy B’s success with the Unreal franchise lead to the developer taking the lead role on Gears of War , a series that would go on to sell millions of copies and become synonymous with the Xbox. Under Cliffy B’s watchful eye, the grub shooting, chainsaw hacking action of Gears became a fan favorite, spanning two sequels and one prequel.

But after the release of the critically praised Gears of War 3 , Bleszinski decided to part ways with Epic and blaze his own trail, founding Boss Key Productions and announcing the FPS title. But now that the Gears series has been passed along to The Coalition, gamers wait to see what the first post-Epic Gamesgame will be like. While fans wonder ifwill live up to expectations, Cliffy B had nothing but good things to say about the upcoming game on Twitter.

With the release of the first cinematic Gears of War 4 trailer, dubbed “Tomorrow,” fans got their first real look at JD Fenix, son of beloved Gears protagonist Marcus Fenix. The trailer, set to a dark cover of “The Sound of Silence,” evokes Gears iconic “Mad World” trailer that got fans talking back in 2006. While Cliffy B is not involved in the production of the latest Gears , he was quick to offer words of praise on Twitter, tweeting:

This made me misty. Even calling it "tomorrow" as in "we have a tomorrow" - that's what JD is to Marcus. Oh man. https://t.co/TPNNFMbzyz— Cliff Bleszinski (@therealcliffyb) April 11, 2016

Cliffy B also went full fanboy in response to the official Gears of War twitter account tweeting the trailer, posting a short glowing review, leading to The Coalition’s studio head Rod Fergusson thanking Cliffy for the kind words.

“A bit. It was such a key part of my adult life. Always fond of it. On to @lawbreakers now tho. : )”

With Cliffy B’s official seal of approval, Gears fans might have a bit more optimism in The Coalition’s ability to do the Gears franchise justice. Fans of the typically violent shooter balked when the developer revealed that Gears of War 4 would feature an optional gore and explicit language filter, the revelation that The Coalition will implement split-screen in all modes, along with the addition of the enemy decimating dropshot weapon, seems to suggest that Gears of War 4 is shaping up to be the kind of fans gamers, and Cliffy B, can get behind.
