The upcoming Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water on the Wii U will have costumes based on popular female Nintendo characters from The Legend of Zelda and Metroid .
According to a short video released by Nintendo, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water will have alternate costumes based on Princess Zelda and Samus Aran.
We’re not sure if the costumes are specific to one character or another, but the video does showprotagonist Miu Hinasaki in the Twilight Princess Zelda garb, whereas another playable character, Yuri Kozukata, has donned the Zero Suit Samus uniform.
The short video shows the girls exploring Mt. Hikami while dressed as the two female Nintendo icons, which was revealed in the E3 2015 trailerto be a popular, haunted suicide spot among the mountain’s locals. It’s still a mystery how these alternate costumes are unlocked, or if there are more outfits based on Nintendo characters in the game.
While Amiibo support for Fatal Frame hasn’t been announced, there’s a chance that the costumes are unlocked in that manner, like how Amiibos unlock new characters in Super Mario Maker . Of course, players may also be able to access the costumes the old-fashioned way, by accomplishing something or finding them in the game, but Nintendo hasn’t released any specifics just yet.

Nintendo has actually been doing this quite a bit lately, including Nintendo-themed costumes in games that otherwise would have nothing to do with their iconic franchises. Take, for example, which allowed players to dress the titular witch in outfits styled after Link as well as Samus.
It’s likely that Nintendo posits that by adding these costumes, it will expand the appeal of games that won’t sell very well otherwise. In any case, costumes like these give the games added value, so we’re certainly not complaining.
