s have fallen under hard times as of late, a new renaissance is set to begin in 2015 that hopes to shed some of that stigma. Where films like Super Mario Bros. and Prince of Persia have perpetuated the assumption that all video game movies are bad, these new films want to break the mold.
First up is Hitman: Agent 47 , an adaptation of the popular Eidos Interactivegame. The film is slated to hit later this summer, and today Fox has released the first trailer, which readers can check out above.
Some may remember that Fox attempted to adapt the game series back in 2007 with Timothy Olyphant in the lead role of Agent 47. In fact, that film was somewhat well received by fans, but ultimately its franchise potential died off.
This latest reboot tries to put a more serious spin on the Agent 47 character, played by Rupert Friend, but also doesn’t put him at the dead center of the story. It seems that Zachary Quinto’s John Smith character is as much the lead of Hitman: Agent 47 as the titular bald assassin.
Ultimately, only time will tell whether Hitman: Agent 47 finds success at the box office and breaks the mold for video game adaptations. Hollywood seems to have increased their interest in adaptations, and smartly put key creative people from each property’s development in character of the respective films.
Ubisofthas put key people on the Assassin’s Creed filmand The Last of Us moviehas game creative director Neil Druckmann on-board as writer. So, even if Hitman: Agent 47 doesn’t hit, there are still a few more video game films that could succeed where it fails.
What do you think of Fox’s adaptation of the Hitman game? Will you watch the movie?
Hitman: Agent 47 hits theaters on August 28, 2015.
