Pro wrestler turned mixed-martial artist CM Punk responds to fans on Twitter that are angry about his high overall rating in the upcoming EA Sports UFC 2 .
EA Sports UFC 2 has enjoyed a surprising amount of controversy since its announcement. First, cover athlete Ronda Rouseyhad her undefeated streak broken by Holly Holm, and now one of the most high profile stars on the roster, CM Punk, is causing a stir by insulting those upset with his overall rating in the game.
Fans are upset because CM Punk, a former professional wrestler best known for his WWE tenure, hasn’t even debuted in the UFC, but EA Sports has given him an 85 overall rating in. These fans have not been quiet about their disappointment, and have voiced it to Punk on Twitter. CM Punk has fired right back, as can be seen in the tweet below.
Not since Samus Aran was revealed to be a woman have dummies been this butt hurt about a video game.— Coach (@CMPunk) January 11, 2016
While Punk’s response will be amusing to some, it shouldn’t discredit what is a legitimate complaint from fans, as it is puzzling how EA Sports can determine an overall rating for a fighter that has never actually been in a professionally-sanctioned fight. Of course, the inclusion of Punk is important for the game’s publicity, but even so, giving him an 85/100 rating seems a bit generous, especially since it is likely higher than some other fighters on the roster that have actually had UFC fights.
Furthermore, Punk’s joke about Samus Aran may serve to irk some gamers, as it doesn’t make much sense. Samus Aran is one of the most celebrated female icons in the history of video games, and is generally beloved by gamers. So much so, in fact, that when Nintendo revealed a Metroid game without Samus, it resulted in a petition to get it cancelled. Simply put, Punk’s implication that gamers are upset by Samus’s gender may not sit well with some.
Between Punk’s overall rating, his insulting response to fans, and Ronda Rousey’s stunning loss at the hands (or foot, rather) of Holly Holm, the buildup to this year’s UFC game has been fueled by a surprising amount of controversy. It will be interesting to see if Punk’s overall rating is lowered when the game actually releases in response to the backlash, or if EA Sports will keep it the same, just as the company has decided to keep Rousey as the EA Sports UFC 2 cover athlete.
EA Sports UFC 2 is scheduled to release March 15th for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
