In his first professional season in his home nation of Uruguay, Bruno Fornaroli scored an overhead kick goal.

Back then he was with the Montevideo-based club Nacional. On Sunday night in the A League elimination final, Fornaroli did it again with his 40th minute bicycle kick putting Melbourne City up 1-0 en route to a 2-0 win over Perth Glory at AAMI Park.

Fornaroli followed up with a curling free kick in the 76th minute to seal the result and make it 25 goals for the campaign.

He said such goals were rare and had to be celebrated.

"I try every time and this [goal] is coming, if you have the confidence maybe something like this happen," Fornaroli said.

"One time in Nacional in Montevideo my first season I also scored [a goal] like this.

"When the ball came [into the box] you think 'alright maybe this is the moment'."

Fornaroli said he had struck his free kicks well over the past week.

"Aaron Mooy is the best free kick [taker] but this last week at training I take them with Aaron and I say if there is one I will try [it]," Fornaroli said.

"That gave me the confidence and luckily it went in."

Mooy said Fornaroli continued to amaze his teammates.

"Stuff like that gives the team a big boost, it just changes the game in a moment," Mooy said. "I was as shocked as everyone else when he did that."

Perth Glory coach Kenny Lowe said City were the better side on the night and his side didn't rise to meet them.

Lowe questioned whether Fornaroli's bicycle kick should have counted, considering his boot connected with the head of Glory defender Krisztian Vadocz on his follow through.

"We've had two like it this year, we had one at Western Sydney and one here," Lowe said. "I don't want to harp on about that, they were the better team and they deserved it.

"But irrespective of what [happened] he has kicked someone in the head and he has scored but it was there for him to go for and I'd be disappointed if my centre-forward had that chance and hadn't gone for it."

City coach John van 't Schip praised the defence and commitment of his side, along with Fornaroli's goals.

He also said Socceroos right back Ivan Franjic, who was withdrawn on game day with a hamstring injury, faced a race against time to be fit.

"We don't know yet, we have to see how this week goes," van 't Schip said. "He got a bit stiff at training on Friday and he couldn't play.

"It will be a race to get him [Franjic] ready for [this] Friday."

Melbourne City play Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium on Friday at 7.35pm.
