Mark Zuckerberg pays $700 to Indian cybersquatter for rights to domain named after his daughter

Mark Zuckerberg pays $700 to Indian cybersquatter for rights to domain named after his daughter

46
Mark Zuckerberg just paid $700 (around Rs 47,000) to an Indian cyber squatter for rights to maxchanzuckerberg.com. Zuckerberg鈥檚 daughter is named Maxime Chan Zuckerberg and the domain name was reportedly acquired by Amal Augustine soon after Zuckerberg鈥檚 daughter was named, reports ScoopWhoop.

By tech2 News Staff /  18 Apr 2016 , 08:25

Amal Augustine is a student at KMEA college at Kochi and apparently makes a habit of picking up domain names that he thinks will be relevant in the future. When GoDaddy sent Augustine a mail asking him if he was willing to sell the domain, he agreed and asked for $700. Only later did he realise that the domain was being purchased by ICONIQ capital, which manages Mark Zuckerberg鈥檚 assets.

One would certainly expect Augustine to have asked for a great deal more money for a domain even remotely related to Facebook, but whatever the reason, the deal worked out very nicely for Zuckerberg.

GoDaddy鈥檚 policies prevent any form of negotiation where domain name sales are involved, denying Augustine the chance to negotiate the price of the domain with Facebook.

Cybersquatting isn鈥檛 illegal per se, but there are a great many people, like Amal Augustine, who鈥檝e made a habit of it and who have profited from the venture.

Target Just Slashed Prices On Consoles And Old Games

Target Just Slashed Prices On Consoles And Old Games

For a business that once looked like they were abandoning gaming altogether, Target has done a pretty good job of appealing to gamers with some heavy discounts.

For a business that once looked like they were abandoning gaming altogether, Target has done a pretty good job of appealing to gamers with some heavy discounts. Their Ebay store offerings before Christmas were some of the best all year, something many of you took advantage of.

They’re now apparently in the process of clearing out a good deal of gaming stock, from consoles to games.

The post comes courtesy of OzBargain, where it was revealed that the company has slashed the price on everything to accessories, consoles and games for largely old stock.

The deals are available in-storealthough once stock is depleted they won’t be replenished. It’s basically a clearance sale, so you’ll want to get moving — because there are some good offerings.

Consoles

Xbox One (500GB) Assassin’s Creed bundle ($329, down from $499)
Xbox 360 (500GB) Console ($149, down from $279)
Wii U Premium Splatoon Bundle ($279, down from $359)
PS4 (500GB) Disney Infinity 3.0 Star Wars Bundle ($399, down from $419)
PS4 (1TB) Star Wars Battlefront Bundle ($479, down from $549)
PS3 (500GB) console ($200, down from $399)
Xbox One (1TB) Halo 5 Bundle ($399, down from $598)
Xbox One Wireless Controller & Play and Charge Kit ($60, down from $89)

The Xbox One deal is pretty tempting by this stage. You can upgrade the hard drive easily enough — although it still comes down to the age-old problem of what games you want to play.

The wireless controller deal isn’t half bad though. 4-port USB hubs are also $5 for both consoles; they’re surprisingly useful.

That Splatoon bundle’s a bit too high for my liking as well, given how tantalisingly close NX is.

Games

Plenty of surprise bargains here, but you’ll want to read through the whole list.

Dragonball Xenoverse PS4 ($40, down from $74)
Don Bradman Cricket 14 XBO/PS4 ($50, down from $89)
Disney Infinity 3.0 Special Edition Starter Pack PS4 ($59, down from $149)
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 PC ($35, down from $79)
Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare 360/XBO/PS3/PS4 ($20, down from $89)
Bloodborne: Game of the Year Edition PS4 ($49, down from $79)
Assassin’s Creed: Unity PS4/XBO ($15, down from $49)
Rayman Legends PS4/XBO ($15, down from $49)
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition XBO ($10, down from $23)
The Evil Within PS4/XBO ($20, down from $35/$25 respectively)
Until Dawn PS4 ($29, down from $89)
F1 2015 PS4/XBO ($25, down from $59)
Far Cry 4 PS4/XBO ($20, down from $59)
Mortal Kombat X PS4/XBO ($30, down from $69)
NBA 2K15 PS4/XBO ($25, down from $49)
Project CARS PS4/XBO ($30, down from $59)
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor PS4/XBO ($25, down from $49)

Solid offerings. The deals on Don Bradman are quite nice too — plenty of time to train up before the sequel comes out at the end of the year.

If you’re after Amiibo, good news: they’ve all been slashed to $10, down from $17. That includes figures such as Lucario, Duck Hunt, Mega Man, Marth, Tom Nook, Pikachu, and all the others. No word on whether Target won’t restock Amiibo — you’d think they would at some point — however, but again you’ll have to check local stores for availability.

So that’s the full list of most of what’s on offer. Anything take your fancy?

Project September, a fashion marketplace, is the first ‘immersive, visual shopping experience’, says the company led by Gilt Groupe鈥檚 founding Chief Executive Officer Alexis Maybank. The app allows a connection between fashion and design influencers, their audiences and their preferred brands. With this app, consumers can bridge the gap between social browsing and online shopping by tapping an image to instantly make a purchase. Project September is also helmed by Leah Park, serving as Chief Design Officer and Dustin Whitney, Chief Technology Officer.

“Until now, I had to search blindly for items that caught my eye on social media, often never discovering where I could actually make my purchase online,” says Alexis Maybank, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Project September. 鈥淭his was frustrating. So we set out to build a shopping experience where consumers could shop directly from photos.鈥/p>

As former Gilt executives, Alexis Maybank and Leah Park noticed an increase in web traffic coming to Gilt.com from social media platforms. Maybank and Park realised that consumers were discovering products that piqued their interest but there wasn鈥檛 a way to easily move from social browsing to making an instantaneous purchase. They set out to make the visual world shoppable, and they teamed with Co-founder Dustin Whitney to build a strikingly beautiful, visual marketplace where fashion鈥檚 devotees could follow their favorite influencers, swipe from image to image, and easily tap to buy.

Project September has recruited a cadre of fashion advisors including: Marie Claire Creative Director Nina Garcia, Creative Director of House of Harlow 1960 Nicole Richie, model and activist Christy Turlington Burns; as well as top social influencers Patrick Janelle, Pari Ehsan and Blake Scott among others.

鈥淭he talent and industry leaders participating are a testament to Project September鈥檚 alignment with top creative influences in the fashion and beauty industries,鈥 says Creative Director of Marie Claire magazine Nina Garcia. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited to join Project September as an Advisor as social content is evolving in this direction, and I am thrilled to be a part of the revolution.鈥/p>

The founders have raised money from William Morris Endeavor (WME Ventures), Venrock, Greylock Partners, First Round Capital, Montage Ventures and others.

鈥淧roject September redefines the fashion discovery experience with an elegant, social interface that harnesses the psychology of fashion buyers: browse broadly, follow those whose looks you like, and purchase on impulse,鈥 says Venrock Partner Nick Beim. 鈥淚t takes advantage of the rapidly growing wave of user generated fashion content to create a beautifully immersive experience that users don鈥檛 want to end.鈥/p>

Project September, named for the start of the fashion calendar, is designed as a shoppable, shareable digital magazine spread. Anyone can join and share their style and design images with audiences on Project September and also across Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter and Facebook. All creators can earn a commission from the sale of items purchased through their work.

Motorised bike discovered at championship

A concealed motor is discovered inside European champion Femke Van den Driessche's bike frame at the world cyclo-cross championship in Zolder, Belgium.

A gruelling cycling race is somewhat less gruelling if your bike is a motorcycle. Understanding this, some cunning cyclists may be turning the sport into Nascar on two wheels by surreptitiously giving their bikes a motorised boost.

The first confirmed case of mechanical doping surfaced this year when a tiny motor and battery were found inside a Belgian cyclist's bike, but that involved cyclocross, a comparatively minor branch of the sport. The latest accusations emerged Sunday (Monday AEST) on Stade 2, a sports program on the French television network that is also the host broadcaster of the Tour de France. The report suggested that motor doping is also at the highest levels of the sport.

Suggestions that top riders are rigging their bikes have escalated in the past several years. As was the case in the early 1990's with more conventional doping, riders who are the targets of such accusations have dismissed them.

But several current and retired professional riders, including American Greg LeMond, are among those who have said it is a real problem. Brian Cookson, the president of the International Cycling Union, has made the search for technology-based cheating a priority.

Suspicions stem from two factors: The technology exists, and there is an ever-growing library of videos that show suspicious performances and actions by riders as well as teams.

In February, Belgian rider Femke Van den Driessche claimed she was innocent of mechanical doping. She later quit the sport.

Anyone can buy systems that hide small motors and batteries inside bikes. Marketed as a way to help older or infirm people keep cycling, most of the systems power the axle that joins the two crank arms of the bike and are outwardly invisible, with on-off switches hidden under handlebar tape. Newer, even smaller motor systems can slip into the rear hub to boost the bike from there.

For its report, Stade 2 positioned a thermal imaging camera along the route of the Strade Bianche, an Italian professional men's race in March held mostly on unpaved roads and featuring many steep climbs. The rear hub of one bicycle glowed with almost the same vivid orange-yellow thermal imprint of the riders' legs. Engineers and antidoping experts interviewed by the TV program said the pattern could be explained only by heat generated by a motor. The rider was not named by the program and could not be identified from the thermal image.

The program also used the camera at a gran fondo, an amateur and semi-professional event, in Italy. At least one bike showed a suspicious heat pattern around its cranks.

Corriere della Sera, an Italian newspaper that collaborated with the French program, reported that the thermal camera found signs of motors in seven bikes used in the Strade Bianche and at the Coppi and Bartali, another Italian race.

Cycling's equivalents of the Zapruder film are online videos that show unusual patterns of bike changes that precede or follow exceptional bursts of speed by riders. Other videos analyse riders' hand movements for signs of switching on motors. Still other online analysts pore over crashes, looking for bikes on which the cranks keep turning after separation from the rider.

Unlike the thermal images, however, the videos have only implied that a motor was present.

In a statement, the cycling union, which commonly goes by its French initials, UCI, said it had tested and rejected thermal imaging.

"The UCI has been testing for technological fraud for many years, and with the objective of increasing the efficiency of these tests, we have been trialling new methods of detection over the last year," the governing body said. "We have looked at thermal imaging, X-ray and ultrasonic testing, but by far the most cost-effective, reliable and accurate method has proved to be magnetic resonance testing using software we have created in partnership with a company of specialist developers."

Its system uses a device attached to a tablet computer that sends out a magnetic field. Bikes that create unusual disruptions of that field are then pulled for physical inspection.

About 2,000 bikes have been scanned this year, although no inspection took place at the Strade Bianche.

The magnetic resonance device was responsible for the world's first confirmed mechanical doping case. At the under-23 women's event at the world cyclocross championships in late January, it showed a suspicious pattern in a bike belonging to Femke Van den Driessche. A subsequent physical inspection found a motor and battery.

After initially claiming that the bike no longer belonged to her, Van den Driessche, 19, abandoned her defense just before a disciplinary hearing opened and quit cycling.

Earlier in the decade, it was widely believed that motorised cheaters used a system from Austria now called Viv a x Assist. But because that system's device is comparatively heavy and noisy, the general assumption now is that cyclists turn to Stefano Varjas, a Hungarian who demonstrated his products to Stade 2.

In an interview on Monday, Varjas said that his crank-assist devices could produce more than 250 watts, the amount of power a professional rider might typically average during a four-hour race. The smaller hub-assist motors, which he makes only for custom orders, typically produce only about 25 watts, he said, and require the rider to be able to maintain a high pedaling rate as is the case with all professionals. Even a 25-watt boost would be significant during a professional race.

Varjas said his system was nearly silent and light enough to keep a bike at the cycling union's minimum weight.

"If you have this system, you can stay with the group, but nobody hears it, nobody sees it, nobody knows about it," he said of the devices, which cost €10,000 to €25,000 euros (about $14,500 to $36,350), depending on features.

While Varjas said that some professionals and teams used the motors for training — sometimes as a substitute for pacing at high speeds behind a motorcycle — he said that he did not know if the motors were also used in races for cheating. But he added that he believed that some kinds of carbon fibre, the material used to make pro bikes, could render the technology invisible to the cycling union's new screening devices.

Varjas said that many of his customers who merely relied on the device to keep cycling were reluctant to offer endorsements.

"It's a very strange market," Varjas said. "No one will say they have this kind of bike."

Australian Olympians show off Rio uniforms

Australian Olympic athletes and Rio hopefuls unveil the official uniforms to be worn by the Australian Olympic team during the 2016 Olympic Games.

PT1M3S 620 349

Tell her she can't do it.

Sally Pearson has been hearing as much for the past three years that she won't come back, that she won't win another major title, that too many injuries and not enough time to come back from them will end her career sooner than later.

On Tuesday, the defending Olympic women's 100m hurdles champion slammed the critics who have dismissed her just months out from the Rio Games.

"The doubt has been happening since 2013 with my injuries and how I've had hard comebacks, coming back with little time to get ready," says Pearson, who is yet to compete since badly breaking her wrist in June last year. "It's the belief they don't have in me after all I've done for Australian sport and Australian track and field that I don't understand.

"I just think, 'Hang on. I haven't even got there and you're already saying this? How can you predict the future? You don't know what I do in training and how quickly I adapt to things'. I never give up. It's been a horrible 10 months but I still believe that I can win."

Pearson was the biggest and brightest star at the habourside launch of the Australian Olympic team's adidas competition uniforms for Rio.

She will also lead a new-look athletics' team at these Olympics, and one that's brimming with confidence since the ugly departure of former Athletics Australia head coach Eric Hollingsworth, who bizarrely questioned Pearson's work ethic during the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.

He was suspended and sent home after issuing a media release criticising team captain Pearson, claiming she was a bad example to younger athletes by failing to attend a pre-games camp in Britain.

Hollingsworth quit later that year.

With fresh faces like Morgan Mitchell (women's 400m) and Luke Matthews (men's 800m) now in the team after some breathtaking performances at last month's national titles, the team has been rejuvenated.

"There wasn't a lot of happiness in the team," Pearson said when asked about the Hollingsworth regime. "There was a negative vibe. In recent years, it's changed.

"It's different this year because there are so many new faces who haven't experienced that before. You can instil some confidence and belief in them.

"[My work ethic] was questioned. That's what will be brought back into the sport: that happiness and bonding and loyalty will be there."

To question Pearson's commitment flies in the face of almost every other expert you speak to about the 29-year-old, um, veteran?

"Yes, I'm a veteran now," she laughs.

When you meet her, your first reaction is to look down at her left wrist and notice the three scars following her traumatic fall at a Diamond League meet in Rome last year.

The image of Pearson bellowing in pain is not easily forgotten.

"My left wrist is quite famous," she says. "Three scars, 12 broken bones and dislocation … It doesn't move but I'm not in pain now."

That lack of movement means Pearson has had to modify the way she lines up for the all-important start, going from an "L-shape" formation with her hands to starting off with her knuckles.

She has more time to test out the change in an unofficial race in Australia next month before heading to Europe for their domestic season in June.

Perhaps the most significant moment in her comeback came just a week ago when she hurdled for the first time since her injury after exploding out of the blocks.

"The night before, I was quite nervous," she admits. "It's like I was racing the next day … When I got out there, all that nervous energy disappeared and I was back at work again."

She posted a video of the moment on on her social media accounts. That's about as much publicity as she seeks.

So this happened today!!! First time since 4th June 2015, now just got to get faster and faster!! pic.twitter.com/IIOzbxYddi

— Sally Pearson OAM (@sallypearson) April 18, 2016

Asked how her life has changed since winning gold in London, Pearson says this: "Just being more recognised. Anywhere where you go, people do a double take, which is nice. My whole career has been about making sure I'm known for what I do on the track and nothing else. I don't go seeking media attention. I'm out here doing the best I can for me."

Man completes blind backflip over speeding Formula E racer

Man completes blind backflip over speeding Formula E racer

Professional stuntman Damien Walters successfully completed one of his most terrifying stunts yet.

The stunt was organized by the people running the Formula E Championship, and saw Walters execute a blind backflip over one of the championship’s electric race cars traveling at precisely 60 mph.

Walters, who has performed stunts for numerous Hollywood movies, makes it look easy but there were two days of preparation to get everything right. Behind the wheel was stunt driver Alistair Whitton who rightly describes the stunt as "crazy."

Although the jump was blind, Walters had a little help. A visible digital clock identified the exact time he needed to jump—6.6 seconds after the car started. If he jumped too early he would have hit the back of the car with his head; too late and the car would have crashed into his legs.

Below is a 360-degree view of the stunt so you can view it in multiple angles.

Leak points to a remastered Batman Arkham HD Collection

Leak points to a remastered Batman Arkham HD Collection

If last year’s Arkham Knight made you wish you could jump back into Rocksteady’s first two Batman games on a current-gen console, you just might be in luck.

According to a report by Eurogamer, it appears both Arkham Asylum and Arkham City will be getting the remastered treatment. Better yet, both will be available together in the Arkham HD Collection, set to go on sale for pre-order tomorrow, April 19, for PS4 and Xbox One. Including all the DLC for both games, the collection will then release June 10. The leak comes courtesy of a GameStop employee who took pictures of the listing.

Both Arkham Asylum and Arkham City released last generation, on PS3 and Xbox 360, making the ‘HD Collection’ moniker a little suspect. But if the collection is real, it’s interesting that it only includes Rocksteady’s entries in the series. WB Montreal’s Arkham Origins is absent.

Released in 2009, Arkham Asylum sees Batman travel to the notorious mental institution, transporting the Joker. After a mass escape however, everything falls into chaos. Following a similar trend of locking Batman in a prison with all of his greatest villains, Arkham City was released in 2011. With part of Gothom walled off as a massive maximum-security prison, Batman finds himself thrown inside.

As we learn more about the Arkham HD Collection, and learn if it is in fact real, you’ll find it all right here on Gamespresso. Would you pick up an Arkham Collection? Let us know in the comments.

2017 Audi Q7: Driving The Only New SUV With All-Wheel Steering

2017 Audi Q7: Driving The Only New SUV With All-Wheel Steering

The new Q7 manages to provide a driving experience that, on tight, curvy roads, feels like that of a tidy mid-sizer.

Nimble, agile, and even tossable aren’t words that you’ll often find in driving impressions of a big three-row utility vehicle. Yet they most definitely apply to the 2017 Audi Q7.

The new Q7 manages to provide a driving experience that, on tight, curvy roads, feels like that of a tidy mid-sizer. You might actually forget you’re in a tall utility vehicle that’s around 200 inches long—the length of a full-size sedan.

ALSO SEE: 2017 Lincoln Continental Spy Shots

The 2017 Q7 is essentially the same size as its predecessor, yet it has a new aluminum-intensive body construction (alloy body panels and a structure using high-strength steels) and completely new platform. It’s nearly 500 pounds lighter (or by official U.S. specs, more like 300 pounds) and its center of mass is about two inches lower.

But it also has its tricks—like all-wheel steering. In top-trim form, with all the right option boxes clicked, this big utility wagon has a sophisticated, height-adjustable air suspension and well-tuned suspension that really work to maximize this vehicles ride quality and cornering potential.

With that top chassis combination, the Q7’s suspension soaks up the side-to-side pitchiness that can be unsettling to taller vehicles over mottled backroads, yet it’s exceptionally good in sudden weight transfers for tight corners and quick emergency maneuvers—when it doesn’t stay artificially flat but instead loads up like a good, very firmly tuned standard suspension.

Quattrosteer, not Quadrasteer

The Q7 is the first SUV with four-wheel steering since GM’s Chevy Suburban and GMC Yukon XL models offered it more than a decade ago.

READ: The 2016 Nissan GT-R NISMO Has A Soul: I Met It

Victor Underberg, the head of chassis dynamics at Audi AG, rode along with us for an hour or so, and he helped us understand how the all-wheel steering works in the Q7.

According to Underberg, there are some serious differences in the behavior of the rear wheels between the Q7’s Drive Select modes (Comfort, Dynamic, Auto, and Individual, as well as Off-Road in some situations). The Q7’s Dynamic Mode not only reduces the maximum angle of the rear wheels in tight cornering but changes the entire way the system works in quick maneuvers and nearer to the limit.

Alex St John's Ideas About Game Development Are Terrifying

Alex St John's Ideas About Game Development Are Terrifying

Earlier today you would have seen the story how Alex St.

Earlier today you would have seen the story how Alex St. John, the creator of DirectX and founder of WildTangent, came out over the weekend trying to recharacterise the conditions of game development. It’s art, not a job, and game developers shouldn’t be as concerned with stress, work-life balance or fair wages. Those were some of the arguments St. John made, although you should read them within to understand the full context.

St. John also has strong views on who precisely game studios should hire. It’s contained in a presentation called “Recruiting Giants” and suggests, among other things, that coding isn’t actual work, “real” programmers don’t value money and that working juniors and interns so hard they burn out is “good for them”.

But let’s take a step back and provide some context.

In the wake of this year’s Game Developers Conference, there’s been renewed debate about how to tackle crunch within the video game industry. The International Game Developers Association revealed that they would be releasing a report on studios with the best crunch time practices later this year, with tangible rewards to be offered in 2017 to companies that are performing the best.

According to the IGDA, 37 percent of developers last year told the association that they didn’t receive any compensation for crunch time. And the causes of crunch haven’t changed over the years: feature creep, managers who don’t have the experience for their position, inept project management.

St. John’s answer to those criticisms was that developers today have developed a “culture of victimology and a bad attitude toward their chosen vocations”. “Somehow, these people have managed to adopt a wage-slave attitude toward one of the most remarkable and privileged careers in the world,” he continued.

Jason’s piece from earlier today tackles that in further detail. But the question remains: if you’re leading a game development studio in 2016, and you subscribe to the same philosophy as St. John — how do you avoid these supposedly toxic employees?

His answer is contained in a 14 page presentation hosted on his website called “Recruiting, Training and Retaining Giants”.The idea is simple: how do you recruit the best employees in a world where turnover is high, talent is being headhunted by major corporations with “bottomless pockets” and the market is filled with “spoiled kids who know their value”?

The whole idea is to find giants — employees so productive and so beholden to the company that they are worth 10 or 20 “ordinary engineers”. Giants view coding as a calling, not a job — and those are the people you should be targeting.

You can’t target these super engineers with money, because according to St. John the money only goes to their wives and girlfriends anyway. “They don’t ‘feel’ income,” the industry veteran argues. “Consistent income is taken for granted, they feel ‘change in income’. Bursts of unexpected bonuses for achievement and long hours work well while controlling overall compensation costs.”

He adds that “potential money is worth more than actual money”, at least as a motivational tool and incentive.

Perhaps the most objectionable of St. John’s philosophy, however, follows a section titled “The Young the Old and the Useless”. The young are interns, engineers just out of university or TAFE, people fresh into the industry — people that, St. John argues, should be worked “too hard” as “it’s good for them and the only way they get seasoned”.

Hiring managers should also be keenly aware for the “holy grail” of employees: “the undiscovered Asperger’s engineer”.

Older engineers have their use as well, although St. John notes that you’ll often have to pay well for the benefit of experience. “[They] can’t be recruited with money,” St. John says, with challenges and a lifestyle change often more successful motivators. They’re also great mentors for younger employees, which you’ll want to hire lots of to offset the expense of hiring a veteran in the first place.

But the worst employees of all are the mediocre, workers who St. John argues are concerned with a work-life balance, workers intelligent enough to know their market value. “They are generally specialists who have stopped learning. They have entrenched habits and attitudes that can’t be changed,” the slide says.

St. John also espouses on why “technical women” and female engineers are highly valued.

In short, if you want a manager then you want to hire a technical woman who doesn’t have Asperger’s. That last bit isn’t mine, either: it’s a note on the final slide.

In a world where game developers are seeking ways to overcome crunch and the causes within, St. John is actively arguing that hiring managers seek out personalities best suited for that world. I’d like to say it’s an antiquated take on game development, but the reality is many studios still demand crunch time from their employees — and knowing that, companies are likely to want characters prepared to sacrifice for that.

Fortunately, it’s not a philosophy many subscribe to. Hojo Studio’s Richard Saltertold me St. John’s views was like reading a pick-up guide for game development. “This is like the recruitment equivalent of that Real Social Dynamics guy, with his ‘diss fatties, bang hotties’ mantra,” he remarked.

Tim Dawson, the co-founder of Witch Beam (Assault Android Cactus), added that he had plenty of experience with companies and managers who subscribed to similar philosophies as St. John — and it doesn’t work.

… unpaid overtime / crunch is inefficient. It can get the ball over the line, but costs. Bosses who think otherwise are bad at their jobs

— Tim Dawson (@ironicaccount) April 17, 2016

… YOU can be thankful for your job, but your employer is thankful for YOU, as you turn money into something they need more than that money

— Tim Dawson (@ironicaccount) April 17, 2016

… any time a boss tells you how lucky you are to have a job, you should be thinking "why does this person need me to feel desperate?" …

— Tim Dawson (@ironicaccount) April 17, 2016

But perhaps the most telling element of all of this is St. John’s own experience. In an interview by Christopher Redner, St. John himself suffered burn out at Microsoft to the point where he “got himself fired”. “He would pass out at his keyboard and straggle into morning meetings with key marks on his face. Worked sucked everything out of him; his marriage disintegrated.”

St. John’s hiring practices haven’t changed, either. “As a CEO, St. John makes sure his staff is populated by younger versions of himself–smart, energetic, creative problem-solvers with workaholic tendencies–and hires sharp managers to tame them.”

According to a Shacknews interview from 2007,St. John was going through a “messy divorce” at the time. He wanted to get fired rather than quit, because that ensured he’d retain his stock options for Microsoft.

“That’s a common pattern at Microsoft — had it not been for that going on, I probably would’ve wanted to gut it out because I was having a good time,” St. John reportedly said. “It was an enormously high pressure job, and it was very difficult to have other stuff going on in your personal life at the same time you’re dealing with a high pressure job.”

As Vlambeer’s Rami Ismail points out:how many people has this industry lost because they left for a career and environment where they wouldn’t burn out? And what would DirectX look like today if St. John was still working at Microsoft, if someone had seen to ease the pressure on him?

2016 Porsche Panamera Edition Sedan Debuting In New York

Porsche is set to replace its Panamera by an all-new model next year but is giving new car shoppers a few sweeteners to hop behind the wheel of the current one.

next year but is giving new car shoppers a few sweeteners to hop behind the wheel of the current one. Recently, Porsche launched a special version of the range-topping Panamera Turbo S Executive, and now the entry-level, V-6-powered Panamera models are getting the special treatment too.

At the 2015 New York Auto Show this week, Porsche will roll out the new Panamera Edition and Panamera 4 Edition models. The cars stand apart from the regular pack thanks to high-gloss black trim strips on the side windows, 19-inch wheels borrowed from the Panamera Turbo, and body-matching door handles (when Porsche Entry & Drive is selected).

For the interior, there’s standard two-tone leather, a Sport Design steering wheel, door sill plates with "Edition" lettering, special floor mats, and the Porsche logo embossed on the headrests. You also get a Bose premium sound system with 14 speakers.

Some of the tech features made standard on the Panamera Edition and Panamera 4 Edition include active suspension, adaptive lights, a backup camera, parking sensors, and speed-sensitive speeding.

Power in both comes from a naturally-aspirated 3.6-liter V-6 good for 310 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The transmission is Porsche's seven-speed PDK dual-clutch unit.

Sales of the Panamera Edition models commence in June. Prices start at $80,995 for the rear-wheel-drive model and $85,295 for the all-wheel-drive model. Both figures include Porsche’s standard $995 destination charge.

Dick Smith Is Selling Everything, And I Mean Everything

Dick Smith Is Selling Everything, And I Mean Everything

The current plan is for all Dick Smiths to close by the end of April, but over the weekend some closed their doors for the last time.

If you’ve ever wandered into a Dick Smith in the last week or so, it’s pretty depressing.

These guys are selling everything. And I mean everything .

I don’t know about you, but I’m really in need of some uncut confetti.

One store was trying to sell these things for 25 cents each!

It’ll be a shame to see Dick Smith go. The stores themselves were a bit of a relic, but it’s been such a fixture in Australian retail. Good luck to all the staff members who’ll soon be out of a job.

2017 Bentley Bentayga first drive review

2017 Bentley Bentayga first drive review

Spain is a country of contrasts: exclusive estates tower over luxury resorts at the Mediterranean coast, while just a few miles inland, crumbling villages scrape by in picturesque poverty.

Spain is a country of contrasts: exclusive estates tower over luxury resorts at the Mediterranean coast, while just a few miles inland, crumbling villages scrape by in picturesque poverty. So, too, the Bentley Bentayga. Not in its economics, of course, but in its character.

As Bentley’s first SUV—which Bentley claims to be the world’s first hyper-luxury SUV—the Bentayga is undeniably a refined, elegant machine, one with an available $170,000 Mulliner Tourbillon timepiece. It’s luxurious in a way that few cars except Bentleys are: luxurious in time and resources as well as money.

Handcrafting each Bentayga takes 130 hours; that’s about three to six times an average car’s production time. The effort shows in every hand-stitched seam, every millimeter-perfect fitment, and every expertly crafted detail—just as it does in every Bentley.

ALSO SEE: 2017 Infiniti Q30 First Drive

Accommodations are phenomenal, whether you choose the front-row cloning four-seat rear option or the five-passenger bench. Just don’t expect to seat 4-5 six-and-a-half footers for long; the rear seat works best with the front passenger seat pushed all the way forward (a feat you can accomplish from the right-rear seat’s controls).

Likewise, the Bentayga’s time in development was well spent, despite being the quickest Bentley has ever brought a product to market, at just 48 months from concept to production (which starts November 27, though the first U.S. deliveries won’t arrive until March). But during those 48 months, the Bentayga turned over 400 laps on the Nordschleife, tuning the SUV to enable maximum cornering loads of 1.1 g as well as more hustle than you’d expect out of a high-riding super-luxe beast.

An all-new W-12 engine lies under the hood, too, keeping the bore spacing of its predecessor, but cutting weight, adding port- and direct-injection fueling, and twin-scroll turbos to rate 600 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. Zero to 60 mph? Four seconds flat.

The Bentayga’s driving characteristics are difficult to discern. An industry-first electro-mechanical active anti-roll bar controls body roll much like the hydraulic systems found in other carmakers’ high-performance off-roaders, but reacts three times quicker, thanks to a supercapacitor-powered 48-volt electrical system. An electric motor along the anti-roll bar drives a gearbox that acts like a dynamic spring, increasing roll stiffness as the vehicle leans. The behavior of the active system steps up as you progress from Comfort to Bentley to Sport modes on the console-mounted dial. Those modes adjust the responsiveness of the ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox, throttle response, and dynamic dampers as well.

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept: 2012 Paris Auto Show

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept: 2012 Paris Auto Show

Back in July, we brought you news that Porsche had plans to unveil a shooting brake or estate version of its Panamera sedan at this year’s Paris Auto Show .

. Now that we’re just hours away from the opening of the Paris festivities, it turns out that we were correct.

Making its world premier in Paris, the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is a shooting brake variant of the popular Porsche sedan, aimed squarely at rivals like the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brakeand the Jaguar XF Sportbrake.

Front end styling will be familiar to anyone who’s seen the 2013 Panamera sedan prototypes, which gives the updated Panamera a more elegant (and less bulbous) appearance. The new look is certainly an improvement on the original design, but especially so at the rear, which has undergone a major change.

Porsche makes no secret that the body of the Panamera Sport Turismo is an outlook on a possible Porsche sports car of tomorrow. Standout features include the headlights, which are full LED units, while the turn signals have been integrated into new C-shaped units mounted in the intakes, which Porsche likes to call “C-Blades."

Inside, the Panamera Sport Turismo adopts a "less is more" philosophy, giving the driver "as little as possible and as much as necessary" in Porsche's own words. There are no traditional analog instruments, but instead a large thin-film-transistor (TFT) LCD display can be user-configured to show a variety of data. Side mirrors are omitted, replaced by dual rear cameras and dual dashboard displays. Even a conventional "Start" button is absent; instead, the car is brought to life with a touch of the TFT display (on the left side, of course).

The Panamera Sport Turbo also communicates with a dedicated smartphone app, allowing owners to access and control a wide range of vehicle systems and functions. Not only can owners check time required to recharge the plug-in hybrid's batteries, they can also set cabin temperature to the desired level, ensuring total occupant comfort from the time the door is opened.

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo concept

You did read the last paragraph correctly: this Porsche is a plug-in hybrid, which you may have also guessed from the “e-hybrid” badges on the sides. The drive system of the Panamera Sport Turismo is an advanced development of the parallel full hybrid that Porsche already implements today in the Panamera S Hybrid and Cayenne S Hybrid. The new electric motor produces about 95 horsepower, which is around twice as much as in today’s Porsche hybrid drive, while the supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine still produces 333 horsepower on its own.

What isn’t clear is whether Porsche would buck the trend set by Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, who opted not to bring shooting brake variants into local showrooms. The U.S. is a key market for Porsche, and offering a shooting brake variant of the Panamera could further strengthen U.S. sales just as sales in the Chinese market are cooling.

2018 Volkswagen Touareg spy shots

2018 Volkswagen Touareg spy shots

It may look like an Audi Q7 but pictured here is actually a very early test mule for the third-generation Volkswagen Touareg, which we expect on market in the second half of 2017, as a 2018 model.

It may look like an Audi Q7 but pictured here is actually a very early test mule for the third-generation Volkswagen Touareg, which we expect on market in the second half of 2017, as a 2018 model. The current Touareg was all-new for 2011 and received a mid-cycle update for 2015.

We know the test mule is a VW because of the interior, which features a number of VW-badged items. The vehicle’s license plate data also reveals that it is registered with the city of Brunswick, Germany, which is close to VW’s main R&D center. Other tell-tale signs that this is a test mule include ill-fitting body panels, a makeshift exhaust system and a slightly shorter wheelbase compared to the standard Q7.

The new Touareg will ride on the SUV version of VW’s flexible MLB Evo platform, albeit a shortened version of the platform. The new platform debuts in the 2017 Audi Q7 and will eventually appear in numerous other models from Audi as well as some from Bentley and Porsche. In fact, the development of the new Touareg will be closely aligned with that of the next-generation Porsche Cayenne, which we’re also expecting to be introduced for the 2018 model year.

Not much is known about the new Touareg but expect the styling to follow an evolutionary path, with elements borrowed from the latest Passat model sold overseas. It’s likely lighter weight, new tech goodies and more efficient powertrains will also be thrown into the mix.

It’s too early to talk specifics but we could see four-cylinder engines introduced as the base option in the U.S.  A plug-in hybrid option is also likely, and we could also see a 10-speed DSG dual-clutch gearboxintroduced. New tech goodies should include a digital gauge cluster as well as a multitude of driver assist systems and perhaps even some semi-autonomous tech.

Look for a reveal of the new VW Touareg in late 2016 or early the following year. The first prototypes should starting hitting the road sometime next year. Note, before the new Touareg arrives, VW will start selling a new seven-seat SUV that will be built in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This model will be sold alongside the Touareg, meaning the new 2018 model is likely to be positioned as a more premium offering to make space for the U.S.-built SUV.

Motorised bike discovered at championship

A concealed motor is discovered inside European champion Femke Van den Driessche's bike frame at the world cyclo-cross championship in Zolder, Belgium.

The Belgian cyclist at the heart of the sport's first mechanical doping scandal says she will not defend herself at a disciplinary hearing this week and is quitting the sport.

Femke Van Den Driessche, 19, was accused of using a concealed motor in her bike during the under-23 cyclo-cross world championships in January in Belgium.

In February, Belgian rider Femke Van den Driessche claimed she was innocent of mechanical doping. She later quit the sport.

The rider says she has "decided to quit cyclo-cross" and that "acquittal would be impossible".

The motorised bike was found in her competition area at the championships. She claimed the bike belonged to a friend.

Official: Lamborghini SUV Confirmed, Sales To Start In 2018

Official: Lamborghini SUV Confirmed, Sales To Start In 2018

Lamborghini has finally confirmed plans to launch on the market an SUV.

Lamborghini has finally confirmed plans to launch on the market an SUV. Lamborghini first previewed the vehicle in 2012 with the Urus conceptbut concerns over the health of the global economy as well as labor relations and potential incentives from the Italian government kept delaying the green light from being given.

At a press conference in Rome today, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann finally confirmed that the automaker will in fact go ahead with the SUV. Sales are scheduled to start sometime in 2018.

ALSO SEE: How Does A Differential Work?: Video

Though not mentioned by the automaker, it’s believed that the Italian government has awarded Lamborghini upwards of 80 million euros (approximately $87 million) in tax breaks and other incentives. In return, Lamborghini will hire around 500 new employees and invest significantly in expanding its facilities.

Lamborghini has confirmed that production will take place at its home in Sant’Agata Bolognese, which will need to be expanded for this third model line, increasing from the current 80,000 square meters to an area covering approximately 150,000 square meters. The project will include the construction of new facilities, such as a new production line, warehousing and enlargement of the R&D department. The addition of a third model line will also provide important opportunities for the supplier network.

It's possible that the basic body for the SUV will be built at the same plant in Slovakia where bodies for other Volkswagen Group SUVs are sourced, as Lamborghini’s new model will share the high-riding version of the MLB Evo platform, currently found in the latest Audi Q7 and destined to underpin Bentley’s Bentayga as well as next-generation versions of the Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg.

To extract the performance one would expect of a Lamborghini from this platform, engineers are expected to use lighter carbon fiber in place of some of the steel and aluminum sections. Key rivals would include Aston Martin’s planned SUV based on the DBX concept as well as high-end versions of the Maserati Levante and Porsche Cayenne.

DON'T MISS: BMW Completely Gives Up, Accepts Ugly As Its Only Design Motif

Note, this won’t be the first SUV in Lamborghini’s 50-year history. That honor goes to the LM002, a rough-and-tumble SUV built in an attempt to secure a military contract in the mid-1980s. Lamborghini didn't get the contract, but went ahead and built a small production run of the 'Rambo Lambo.'

“This is a proud moment for everybody in Lamborghini,” Winkelmann said at today’s press conference. “The introduction of a third model line endorses the stable and sustainable growth of the company and signifies for us the beginning of a new era.

A prototype for Porsche’s third-generation Cayenne SUV has just been spotted. The new vehicle looks much sleeker and sportier than the current one and it should perform significantly better too thanks to its lightweight MLB Evo platform.

Another photo of Aston Martin’s DB11 has surfaced, this time revealing the front of the car. It’s a handsome look that we bet will look even better in person, as is the case with most of Aston Martin’s designs.

Nissan is thought to be bringing out a new Armada for 2017. According to the latest rumors, the vehicle might simply be a rebadged version of the Patrol SUV sold overseas.

2017 BMW 330e plug-in hybrid U.S. specs, pricing confirmed

2017 BMW 330e plug-in hybrid U.S. specs, pricing confirmed

BMW has confirmed that the plug-in hybrid version of its popular 3-Series lands in showrooms this summer.

The car made its world debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show, but on the eve of this week’s 2016 New York Auto Show BMW confirmed specifications for the United States.

The plug-in hybrid 3-Series, whose official title is 330e i Performance, arrives as a 2017 model and with a starting price of $44,695, including destination. It joins existing BMW plug-in hybrids on sale here such as the X5 xDrive40e i Performanceand i8. We’ll also see a 740e xDrive i Performancein the near future.

The 330e’s plug-in hybrid system consists of a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine working in conjunction with an electric motor integrated with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Drive is to the rear wheels only, just like in a standard 3-Series. The combined peak output is 248 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, which enables 0-60 mph acceleration in 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph.

The electric motor, which has a rating of 87 hp, can drive the vehicle on its own at speeds of up to 75 mph. Powering this motor is a 7.6-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery that on a full charge should provide around 14 miles of electric range. Of course, this will differ depending on driving style and how much brake energy is recovered. BMW says the battery requires 2.5 hours to charge with a 240-volt charger or between 6 and 7 hours to charge with an ordinary 120-v charger.

In case you were wondering, i Performanceis BMW’s way of telling you that its core models feature technology derived from its eco-focused i division cars like the aforementioned i8. i Performance technology essentially spans the electric motor, the battery and the complex control software that ensures all the separate systems work in harmony. Importantly, the i Performance technology has been developed in a modular way, meaning it can be easily tailored to multiple models. In the not too distant future, virtually every model from the BMW lineup will offer some form of electrification.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata first drive: Video

2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata first drive: Video

What’s an automaker to do when it’s time to redesign a car that is universally loved?

What’s an automaker to do when it’s time to redesign a car that is universally loved? Simple, give its fans more of what they love. In the case of the Mazda MX-5 Miata, more equals less.

Since it was introduced in 1989, the Miata has offered the fun, engaging driving experience that can only be achieved through light weight. With a 2016 redesign, Mazda has done its best to take even more pounds out of its featherweight roadster.

ALSO SEE: This Woman Drives The World’s Fastest Charger SRT Hellcat: Video

Employing a “gram strategy” that evaluates every component of the vehicle, Mazda engineers were able to make the fourth-generation Miata, dubbed ND internally, 150 pounds lighter than the third-generation, or NC, Miata. Forty-four of those pounds came out of the body thanks to slightly smaller dimensions and greater use of high-strength steel and aluminum. The ND Miata is about three inches shorter, 0.6 inch wider, and sits 0.4 inch lower than the NC Miata. The wheelbase is also 0.8 inch shorter and the front and rear track is a half-inch wider. While the NC used aluminum for the hood, decklid, center tunnel, and underbody crossbrace, the ND adds it in the front fenders, roll hoops, front and rear bumpers, and portions of the top and floor.

The less-is-more approach extends to the new engine. While the last model used a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produced 167 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque, the new Miata adopts the SkyActiv 2.0-liter four that made its debut in the CX-5. It weighs 18 pounds less than the outgoing engine and makes 12 less horsepower, but it provides better performance due to an additional eight pound-feet of torque, an improved torque curve, and the car’s lower weight. It also delivers about 25 percent better fuel economy, with EPA ratings of 27 mpg city/34 highway with the manual transmission and 27/36 with the automatic.

So how does all that engineering come together? We traveled to Westlake Village, California, to test the new Miata on SoCal canyon roads to find out.

2017 Subaru Impreza debuts in New York: Live photos and video

2017 Subaru Impreza debuts in New York: Live photos and video

Subaru’s all-new Impreza has been revealed today at the 2016 New York Auto Show.

The new generation of the popular compact has been revealed in both its sedan and 5-Door hatchback bodystyles. Both will be on sale late this year as 2017 models.

The new Impreza, the nameplate’s fifth generation, marks an important introduction for Subaru. That’s because the car will be built in the United States for the first time. It's also important as this is the first application of Subaru’s new modular platformthat will eventually underpin almost all of the Japanese brand’s lineup.

The new platform is called the Subaru Global platform, and it’s said to offer significant weight savings and improved levels of rigidity. This should mean the new Impreza is a more efficient, more dynamic car than the one it replaces. We’re told the platform is around 70 percent stiffer than before and with 40 percent better crash energy absorption. Safety is further improved with the latest EyeSight monitoring system that controls a number of electronic driver aids.

The new Impreza is also slightly larger than the one it replaces, with the wheelbase extended by 1 inch, the overall length by 1.6 in and the width by 1.5 in. Height is down 0.4 in, helping to lower the car’s center of gravity. The larger dimensions have led to a roomier cabin.

The design theme here is familiar but there are now multiple screens and the quality, at least on initial appearance, looks to have been improved. The design of the exterior is also familiar but sleeker and more dynamic than before. We can’t wait to see what Subaru does for the eventually WRX and STI variants.

Full powertrain details are yet to be released but we can confirm that a horizontally-opposed 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine remains standard. It’s rated at 152 horsepower and drives all four wheels. The all-wheel-drive system is said to benefit from a new active torque vectoring system. Transmission options once again include 6-speed manual and CVT units.

Further details, plus the all-important pricing info, will be released closer to the market launch late this year.

Based on the C8 Aileron that debuted in 2009, the Preliator first appeared at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. Spyker gave it a second showing in New York because the U.S. is an important market (it sells about half its cars here), and the company's first U.S. dealer was local outfit Manhattan Motorcars.

The Preliator looks similar to Spyker's previous C8 models, and uses the same engine. It's a 4.2-liter V-8 sourced from Audi, but the engine now has an added supercharger that pushes output to a healthy 518 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. That will get the Preliator from 0-62 mph in 3.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 201 mph, according to Spyker. An aluminum spaceframe chassis keeps the curb weight down to 3,065 pounds.

Preliator production will be handled by CPP Metalcraft in the Untied Kingdom. Spyker is also planning a higher-volume model called the B6 Venator, which it hopes to get into productoon later this year. More laterally, it also announced last year that it will work with U.S. electric aircraft startup Volta Volare, leading to speculation about a possible electrified sports car.

2017 Nissan GT-R gets new look, 565 horsepower: Live photos and video

2017 Nissan GT-R gets new look, 565 horsepower: Live photos and video

Nissan today at the 2016 New York Auto Show showed the most extensively updated GT-R since the car debuted in 2007.

Nissan today at the 2016 New York Auto Show showed the most extensively updated GT-R since the car debuted in 2007. Performance fans will care that "Godzilla" adds 20 horsepower, but it also gets an extensively updated interior, a new infotainment system, and revised styling front and rear.

The most noticeable exterior changes are to the front fascia with a version of Nissan's "V-Motion" grille that is larger and therefore improves cooling capability. The mesh pattern is new and so is the matte finish. The revised front lip spoiler and bumper design add downforce, and the hood is tweaked with more pronounced character lines and—we're told—a greater ability to handle high speeds.

Along the sides, the sills are pushed outward to improve airflow and the 20-inch wheels feature a new 15-spoke design. The rear end gets new bodywork, with functional vents next to the quad exhaust tips and a higher beltline that is designed to make the car look wider.

Nissan says these changes make the car more stable at high speeds while maintaining the same 0.26 coefficient of drag. A new Blaze Metallic orange color is also added to the color palette.

The changes inside are more functional on an everyday basis. The dashboard is new, with an emphasis on a horizontal layout and an instrument panel wrapped in Nappa leather. An 8-inch touchscreen replaces the current 7-inch unit, and the number of knobs and switches is reduced from 27 to 11. A Display Command controller is added to the center console, and the car gets the NissanConnect system with navigation and access to mobile apps.

The seats are lighter thanks to a new construction technique and Nissan claims they provide greater comfort and support. The shift paddles also move from the steering column to the steering wheel, where, Nissan says, they are easier to operate mid-turn (though you really shouldn't be shifting in the middle of a turn).

In addition to the new interior look, the 2017 GT-R is quieter inside thanks to the addition of Active Noise Cancellation, more sound deadener, and an acoustic glass windshield. The Premium Edition model also adds Rakuda Tan to its list of color choices.

The 20 extra horsepower brings the total to 565, while torque increases by 4 pound-feet to a new total of 467. Revised ignition timing control and additional turbo boost create the extra power, and Nissan says the car now accelerates better above 3,200 rpm. A new lightweight titanium exhaust system also changes the engine note slightly.

Nissan claims improved handling and smoother ride quality as well, due to a more rigid body structure and revised suspension settings.

The 2017 Nissan GT-R goes on sale this summer and pricing will be announced closer to the market launch. Note, this is expected to be the last major update for the GT-R before the all-new R36 model arrives on the scene, currently thought to be sometime around 2018.

Lexus RX with third-row seats confirmed

Lexus RX with third-row seats confirmed

Its dealers have been clamoring for a crossover SUV with third-row seats for years, but now Lexus has finally confirmed one is coming.

Speaking with Automotive News (subscription required), Lexus General Manager Jeff Bracken said a version of the mid-size RXwith third-row seats would go on sale in late 2017 or early the following year.

The news isn’t a huge surprise as we already have spy shots of prototypes. The shots reveal an RX with a stretched wheelbase and heavily camouflaged rear section.

And modifying the RX to fit third-row seats shouldn’t be a tough task as the vehicle’s corporate cousin, the Toyota Highlander, already has three rows.

For the name, Lexus is expected to simply add an “L” to the names of existing RX variants, as opposed to introducing a new nameplate such as the oft-rumored TX moniker. We know this because the automaker has registered trademarks for the RX 350L and RX 450hL names with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The arrival of the three-row RX should provide a boost in sales for a vehicle that’s already extremely popular. Lexus has consistently sold more than 100,000 examples of the RX in the U.S. every year for the past several years.

Key rivals will be the Audi Q7, Infiniti JX and Volvo XC90.

2017 Fiat 500S: Small car, big statement, bigger stereo

Fiat showed off in Geneva its 500S, a sportier-looking version of the updated 500.

While the Abarth 124 Spidertook the spotlight on Fiat's stand at this week's 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the 500 received a little love too.

Fiat showed off in Geneva its 500S, a sportier-looking version of the updated 500. The model—which won't have any significant performance advantages over the base 500—sports the refreshed version's grille and swept fog lights in the front, along with special bumpers, side skirts and a rear spoiler reserved for the 500S only. The 500S will come in two flavors, seen here, Electronica Blue and a matte Green, with 15-inch alloys as standard, or 16-inch rollers in matte diamond black.

ALSO SEE: Bugatti Chiron revealed: 1,480 hp and 0-62 mph in under 2.5 seconds

Inside, the 500S sports a slightly upgraded interior with yellow, white, or blue accents on black buckets (cloth or hides) with interior accents all the way around. Like the upgraded version we saw last July, the 500S will sport the same upgraded tech that includes a 7.0-inch touchscreen in the middle, fully configurable TFT display for the driver and an available 440-watt Beats by Dre audio system.

The 500S will go on sale in Europe this summer, but the stuffed shirts at Fiat USA won't confirm whether the 500S is headed for the States. It should, though, most likely as a trim level when the refreshed 500 is made available later this fall.

Nissan unveiled the refreshed 2017 GT-R; Acura introduced an updated MDX with a hybrid option; and Lincoln showed off a Navigator concept. It's the Week in Reverse, right here on Motor Authority.

Nissan has given the GT-R its largest refreshsince it was introduced in 2009. The updated car debuted this week at the New York Auto Show and arrives for the 2017 model year. The Japanese sports car features more power, updated styling, better aerodynamics, and a revised interior. Nissan says the new GT-R will go on sale this summer.

While we've been expecting a hardtop version of the new Miata for a little while, we didn't expect Mazda to debut what is essentially a targa model. Dubbed the MX-5 Miata RF—the RF stands for removable fastback—the latest version of the new Miata is simply stunning. The Japanese automaker has yet to announce when the new model will hit showrooms or how much it'll cost, but stay tuned for more info.

Acura used the New York Auto Show to debut the refreshed 2017 MDX, which gets revised styling. While the design is different—note the beak is now dead—it's the new hybrid option that uses an inverted version of the NSX supercar's hybrid system that's the real story. Three electric motors and a gasoline V-6 engine power the new hybrid which will hit showrooms later this summer.

In what has been one of the worst kept secrets—seriously, we've seen the car without camouflage a handful of times already— Audi unveiled the new R8 Spyder supercarin the Big Apple. Powered by the same V-10 engine as the coupe, the new Spyder will let you experience the wind in your hair and the intoxicating sound of that delightful engine.

Hyundai's new Genesis brand gave us our first look at its upcoming BMW 3-Series fighter, the G70. Dubbed the New York concept, it's a rear-wheel-drive compact sports sedan which in concept form features a hybrid powertrain that might see production.

Lincoln gave us a preview of the next-generation Navigator SUV with a stunning concept. Featuring gullwing doors and three "concertina" steps that won't ever see production, the concept gives us an idea of what the automaker's new design language looks like on a large SUV.

The word comes from Dave Pericak of Ford Performance at the Geneva Motor Show. Pericak said the price of the Ford GT would be near that of the Lamborghini Aventador, which stickers at a brisk $397,500, base.

Still, the steep price tag is a disappointment to many enthusiasts, who had hoped for something a bit more attainable—something closer to the $140,000-$150,000 sticker prices of the last Ford GT.

On top of the high price, Ford will be aiming for very low sales volumes of the car: about 250 per year over the course of several years.

Can the Ford GT live up to this hyper-exclusive positioning? Or will the relative pace leave no space for the Blue Oval’s top offering?

He’s featured in this video from YouTube channel Vehicle Virgins , where he states the motivation behind buying the P1 GTR and reveals that McLaren plans to build 50 in total. The P1 GTR was offered exclusively to existing P1 owners and all build slots for the cars are sold out.

For the uninitiated, the P1 GTR is a track-only version of the regular P1. It has a peak output of 986 horsepower, up 83 hp on the road car, and it also benefits from lighter weight, a wider track and more downforce. The price for one, which includes an extensive driver development program, was set at £1.98 million (approximately $2.85 million), or roughly double the price of the regular P1.

Hayne yet to sit down with 49ers coach

Jarryd Hayne begins his pre-season back at San Francisco. The Aussie code-hopper believes he's in better shape than last year to challenge for a spot.

PT1M18S 620 349

Jarryd Hayne had his first real taste of new San Francisco 49ers' head coach Chip Kelly's offence and it could spell trouble for the former NRL star.

One of Hayne's major running back rivals on the 49ers' squad, Mike Davis, is raving about Kelly's fast-paced scheme.

With six running backs on the roster and at least one more expected to be picked up in next week's NFL Draft, the players who do not thrive under Kelly will be cut.

"Let's just say we go really really really fast," Davis wrote on Twitter after a morning session on Monday. "I love this offense!"

Preparing for only his second season in his new code, Hayne has a battle on his hands in such a fast-paced system, competing against players for whom the game is more instinctive.

Kelly and his coordinators were allowed to take Hayne, Davis and the rest of the 49ers through the new playbook on the practice field for the first time.

The NFL's strict rules on coaches interacting with players on the field were lifted after two weeks focused on strength and fitness.

Hayne last week said he had a good grip on the playbook, but during Kelly's time at the Philadelphia Eagles the coach was known for coldly cutting or trading players who did not perform.

Casualties included star running back LeSean McCoy, quarterback Nick Foles and Australian punter Brad Wing.

Davis has reason to be happy with the regime change.

Last season, under fired head coach Jim Tomsula, Davis averaged just 1.7 yards per carry compared to Hayne's 3.1 and starter Carlos Hyde's 4.1.

Kia Telluride Concept Debuts In Detroit, Hints At Potential Borrego Successor

Kia Telluride Concept Debuts In Detroit, Hints At Potential Borrego Successor

The Borrego (a Mohave in other markets) is long gone.

(a Mohave in other markets) is long gone. That full-size SUV offering from Kia bowed out of the United States back at the end of 2009. The Sorento has been pulling three-row duty for the brand in the meantime and has done an admirable job with the task at hand. Still, a larger, more focused SUV would be a nice addition to the Kia lineup, and that's precisely what the automaker is working on with its Telluride concept on show at this week's Detroit Auto Show, or at least it seems.

Here, the idea is to create a more premium Kia experience. A full-size SUV is the perfect platform on which to offer such an experience and Kia has recently undergone a few production exercises to help show it's capable of offering upmarket amenities. The Cadenza and the K900 are proof of that, even if they don't sell particularly well.

CHECK OUT: 2017 Honda Ridgeline Debuts At Detroit Auto Show

With the Telluride, Kia has created a conceptual full-size premium SUV that boasts a boxy aggressive stance on the outside and an upscale cabin space behind the doors. A set of suicide doors allow entrance into that space, which is outfitted with a quartet of black leather captain's chairs. A third row bench seat sits in the rear of the vehicle. The interior has enough space for those middle row seats to recline to an almost flat position for supreme relaxation. Further enhancing the cabin experience is the LED lighting system that is capable of displaying a therapeutic light show. Hey... it's a concept vehicle.

Kia designed both the exterior and interior of the Telluride at its U.S.-based design studio. The concept vehicle is nearly 10 inches longer than a Sorento, and it's also nearly 5 in wider and 4.5 in taller. Currently, the Telluride concept sits on a modified Sorento platform that's been stretched almost twelve inches. It receives forward motivation courtesy of a plug-in hybrid powertrain. A 3.5-liter gasoline V-6 engine works with an electric motor to provide 400 total horsepower while returning over 30 mpg out on the highway.

The automaker has stated that, at the moment, there are no plans to bring the Telluride to production. What’s interesting, though, is that Kia’s new upmarket sister brand Genesis is confirmed to be launching a large SUV later this decade. Should the reception to the Telluride prove positive, it’s entirely possible—and financially sensible, from an investment spreading view—that we see a Kia SUV twinned with the Genesis model.

Harris Scarfe gearing up for growth after Debenhams deal

Harris Scarfe gearing up for growth after Debenhams deal

Department store chain Harris Scarfe is gearing up for the biggest sales boost in its 166-year history after signing agreements with UK retailer Debenhams to open stand-alone stores and stock its designer clothing range.

Harris Scarfe chief executive Graham Dean has detailed plans to open four or five Debenhams stores over the next three years and 10 over the longer term under a franchise agreement signed in October after more than 12 months of negotiations between Harris Scarfe's parent, Pepkor South East Asia, and Debenhams' chief, Michael Sharp.

Each 4000-square-metre Debenhams store is expected to generate sales of more than $10 million – half that of a suburban Myer store – lifting Harris Scarfe's sales by at least $100 million to more than $450 million and taking Pepkor South East Asia's annual revenues to almost $1 billion.

"Once you talk about stand-alone department stores in major centres you're talking pretty significant turnover,' Mr Dean told Fairfax Media in an exclusive interview. "If you have 10 of those up and running that's going to add some significant turnover to the business."

Under a separate brand agreement with Debenhams, Harris Scarfe will stock the UK retailer's Designers for Debenham's clothing range as well as handbags, cosmetics and intimate apparel in most of Harris Scarfe's stores, augmenting its range of national and private label brands.

"We're not a destination for fashion, we know that," said Mr Dean, a former senior Myer executive who joined Harris Scarfe 14 months ago to lead the revitalisation of the formerly family-owned retailer.

"What this does is allow us to parachute in some ready-made credible international designer brands straight into Harris Scarfe stores – it's going to improve our sales densities immediately," he said.

Northern Hemisphere retailers entering Australia, including GAP and Top Shop, have struggled in the past with reverse seasonality.

Mr Dean, 50, who started his 30-year retail career at Sainsbury in the UK and spent 10 years at homewares retailer Habitat before coming to Australia 11 years ago, is confident the Debenhams model will work.

"[Overseas retailers] would traditionally dictate the range to the franchise partner – that's not how this deal works," he said. Harris Scarfe's team will select the UK retailer's best-selling products, and products they think will appeal to local shoppers, including stocking Debenham's summer range in Queensland stores in the same season

"We'll bring to market what we know is going to sell rather than what we hope is going to sell," said Mr Dean, who has hired Myer's former head of womenswear, Nicole Naccarella, as head of fashion to oversee the buying strategy.

Collapsed in 2001

The Debenham's deal is the third major shakeup at Harris Scarfe since it collapsed in 2001, was acquired by corporate advisory firm Momentum Corporate in 2007 and sold to Pepkor (which also owns discount department store chain Best & Less) for $67 million in 2012.

According to Pepkor South East Asia's accounts, losses more than doubled to $92 million in 2015 after the acquisition in 2014 of loss-making New Zealand retailer Postie Plus. But both Harris Scarfe and Best & Less are understood to be profitable on the basis of earnings before interest tax depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA).

"We had a very good financial year last year, we were very pleased with the result in terms of EBITDA and we're meeting all the financial metrics from the initial Pepkor acquisition of Harris Scarfe,' Mr Dean said.

While Harris Scarfe and Best & Less are run as separate entities, both retailers are taking advantage of Pepkor's shared services structure to secure better terms from suppliers, improve supply chain and logistics and find suitable sites for new stores.

Harris Scarfe is also preparing to leverage the supply chain and sourcing capabilities of Pepkor's parent, Steinhoff International, which has annual sales of 105 billion rand ($9 billion) and 6500 retail stores in 30 countries after buying Pepkor last November for 62 billion rand.

"As part of Steinhoff we'll see if we can leverage their supply chain and start to group together and fully utilise how we bring containers out of China and other countries by filling those containers with products from multiple brands and bringing them into distribution centres and then shipping them out to all states," said Mr Dean.

"We were doing that anyway with Pepkor, and now that has magnified under Steinhoff."

In addition to opening 10 Debenhams stores, the first in 18 months, Harris Scarfe is planning to open about 15 Harris Scarfe stores over the next three years, lifting store numbers from 56 to more than 70 – stepping up competition for Myer, Target, Kmart and BIG W.

"We have a very strong pipeline of stores coming through over the next three years – we've signed another eight [leases] and another two stores [leases] that will be signed imminently, one in Western Australia, a few in NSW, a few in Victoria and a few in Queensland."

Mr Dean says the discount department store market is overcrowded, with too many stores per capita compared with markets overseas. ."You can see that playing out between Kmart, Target and particularly BIG W with their negative comparable store sales – you can see a lot of shift in share going on in that space," he said.

But there is scope for Harris Scarfe to grow its market share by focusing on key categories such as cookwear and bedding, stocking wanted national brands such as Tefal, Maxwell & Williams, Sheridan, Sunbeam, Tontine and Linen House, and running an aggressive promotional model rather than the every-day-low-prices model favoured by Kmart, Target and BIG W.

"Because we are a high/low retailer, not a real DDS, that's an opportunity for us to deliver our strategy while that jostling for position continues, particularly with the BIG W uncertainty at the moment," he said. "We see that as an opportunity to pick up market share."
