This Week’s Top Photos: The 2016 New York Auto Show edition

There were plenty of surprises at this past week’s New York Auto Show but one of the best was the unveiling of the updated 2017 Nissan GT-R .

. The changes are the most significant since the GT-R’s 2009 debut, and they’re likely the last before an all-new version of Godzilla arrives on the scene. Along with the unveiling, Nissan also presented a video detailing the complex buildprocess of the car’s twin-turbocharged V-6.

Another major surprise was the reveal of the second-generation Audi R8 Spyder. There’s no V-8 option to be had as the R8 Spyder comes exclusively with a V-10 engine. However, we hear a V-6 option may be added at a later date.

One of the most popular cars was the aptly named New York conceptfrom Hyundai’s new luxury brand Genesis. The concept previews technology and design themes for future Genesis models, specifically a BMW 3-Series-rivaling model to be called the G70.

Another crowd favorite was the Navigator concept from Lincoln. The big, flashy concept previews the design of the next-generation Navigator, which we’re expecting to be launched late next year. Don’t expect the concept’s gullwing doors to make it to production, though.

If you’re a fan of affordable performance, then Mazda had just the ticket for you. On its stand was the 2017 MX-5 Miata RF. The car is the new retractable hardtop version of the Miata but instead of a conventional design the team at Mazda has employed a cool fastback look.

The Miata’s Italian cousin, the Fiat 124 Spider, was presented in New York in Abarth trim. Sadly, the car doesn’t offer any extra power. Instead, its designers focused on creating a more responsive driving experience.

It wasn’t all performance cars and wild concepts. One of the more practical vehicles unveiled was the updated 2017 Acura MDX. The latest version sports a new hybrid system derived from the powertrain of the NSX supercar.

There was also some good ol' American muscle on show. Dodge used the New York Auto Show to announce that all 2016 Chargers and Challengers can now Go Mango. The heritage-inspired color was previously only available on the SRT models.

We couldn’t end this list without featuring the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. We were treated with the reveal of not only the coupe but also the convertible. The coupe hits showrooms later this year while the droptop will arrive in early 2017. Both are to receive an estimated 640 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque.
