Show up to your local Volvo dealer with a $100,000 check and you'll be able to afford most, but not all, of the automaker's new models.
That's because Volvo is introducing an ultra-luxurious model dubbed the XC90 Excellencefor 2017. It made its local debut this week at the 2016 New York Auto Show.
At $105,895, including a mandatory $995 destination charge, the XC90 Excellence is more than double the price of a base XC90, which starts at $44,94 5. It's the most expensive Volvo ever offered to American buyers, and it's also the most luxurious.
That extra 60 grand over the base XC90 price tag nets buyers what Volvo calls "First Class" luxury. Both the front and rear seats are essentially identical, meaning all four passengers-—yes, there are only four seats—are coddled with heated, ventilated, and massaging thrones wrapped in Nappa leather trim. However, the rear seats also recline and there's a full-length console wrapped in leather and open pore wood that goes from the dashboard all the way back through both rows.
A refrigerator with bottle and glass holders also awaits rear seat riders and the cup holders are pre-filled with handmade crystal glasses from Sweden's Orrefors.
Mechanically, the XC90 Excellence is identical to the top-line XC90 T8 Twin Engine, meaning it boasts a hybrid powertrain rated at 400 horsepower. Selecting every option on an XC90 T8 boosts its price to $80,990.
Still, the XC90 Excellence offers a degree of opulence not far off from a Range Rover Autobiography, which stickers for over $200,000.
Production of the XC90 Excellence commences today and Volvo says a handful are earmarked for the United States.
