Double Fine Productions announces Psychonauts: In the Rhombus of Ruin , a standalone Psychonauts game that will be exclusive to Sony’s PlayStation VR headset.
Earlier this week at The Game Awards, Double Fine surprised everyone with the announcement of Psychonauts 2 . Fans had been hoping for a sequel ever since the first game was released back in 2005 and with Double Fine having already raised over $1 million of its $3.3 million goalon crowdfunding service Fig, it seems highly likely that that will finally become a reality.
But that’s not the only Psychonauts related project that the developer has up its sleeve, as during the keynote presentation of Sony’s PlayStation Experience 2015 event, a standalone title called Psychonauts: In the Rhombus of Ruin was also unveiled.
Psychonauts: In the Rhombus of Ruin is an exclusive PlayStation VRexperience, meaning that the only way fans will be able to play it is if they pick up one of Sony’s upcoming virtual reality headsets. Offering a good bridge for fans who’ve been waiting over a decade for new Psychonauts content, In the Rhombus of Ruin will be set between Psychonauts 1 and 2 and will follow on from Psychonaut 1’s cliffhanger. While players will play through the game from Raz’s point of view, the rest of Raz’s pals will also be on-board as the group looks to rescue Lily’s father.
Unfortunately the game’s announcement trailer was a little underwhelming without any gameplay. New Psychonauts is exciting, but for the casual crowd it’s hard to make a statement against the PlayStation Experience trailers forand the Final Fantasy 7 PS4 remake. However, in an interview with, Double Fine’s Tim Schafer did reveal that Pyschonauts: In Rhombus of Ruin will be making good use of Raz’s psychic abilities.
Schafer explains that “he can move things around with telekinesis, burn things with pyrokinesis and he can also use clairvoyance to project his point of view into other people’s brains” and this “provides him with the unique ability to manipulate, and navigate his environment using VR”.
Other Pyschocauts fans, though, likely aren’t excited, as it means that they will have to buy a PlayStation VR headset in order to be all caught up on Psychonauts’ goings on. And with Sony having confirmed that PlayStation VR will be out in the first half of 2016, but not the device’s retail price, even those with pre-existing plans to get the headset don’t know how much they’ll have to fork over.
Psychonauts: In the Rhombus of Ruin is a PlayStation VR exclusive. A release date has not yet been announced.
