Ratchet and Clank, now with zero jank!

In a perfect world, we would have remakes for all our favorite games, rather than mere remasters, or worse, simple ports. This 2016 update of Ratchet and Clank ’s debut is the latest property lucky enough to receive such a reimagining. It’s an update so thorough that it easily joins the rare class of remakes that includes Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes and the Gamecube version of Resident Evil . We already knew the original was great, but it took a 14-year gap and a remake to truly appreciate the timelessness of its creative weapon designs and well-crafted levels.

One mark of this version’s excellence is that you don’t need the original game as a frame of reference to appreciate it. Of course, anyone with a videographic memory and a love for the series will be overwhelmed by the sublime balance of newness and familiarity. For every recognizable platforming challenge, there’s a new section or weapon that keeps the experience fresh. And whether you’ve played a game in the series or not, this installment can be appreciated on it own merits. Put another way, it manages to downgrade the original game from “must play” status to “recommended”.

For all that this new Ratchet and Clank pulls off, it’s a minor miracle that its story doesn’t replace the one from the 2002 game. Insomniac’s writers adeptly avoid questions of canon by making both stories valid. This is thanks to a Rashomon -esque storytelling method where that new tale about Ratchet and Clank ’s fateful meeting is narrated by longtime supporting character Captain Qwark, specifically through his interpretation of events. You can see why Sony went with the back-of-the-box tagline, “The game based on the movie, based on the game.”

Many of the changes have been steered by the plot points of the tie-in film of the same name, which provides plenty of territory for playable scenes. This includes Clank’s escape from the factory and the duo’s cavalry moment at Aleero City, two moments that, incidentally, weren’t playable in the original game. There are a number of film clips that help bring cohesion to the game’s narrative, just enough that they don’t make the movie redundant.

Ratchet and Clank also showcases Insomniac’s devotion to imaginative weaponry. It’s become a trademark for the studio, in the same way altering time has been a signature gameplay device by Remedy and DONTNOD and combo-intensive combat in Ninja Theory’s games. From the missile launching Warmonger to the retro charm of the Pixelizer, the armaments in Ratchet and Clank show the kind of inventiveness you’d see if Pixar made a James Bond movie.

It’s fun to see the mix of new and old weapons, and to play with the funkier armaments in the context of the original story. This makes every level a canvas for destruction as well as a playground of experimentation. Doing well demands making the most of this arsenal, where fending off incoming foes with melee attacks is as important as taking out distant enemies with ranged weapons.

It’s gratifying to figure out the right tool for the job - knowing when a precision weapon is more suited to a given situation than an explosive - and to watch the outcome of your decision play out in a dramatic cartoony kill. And for all its combat complexities, the beauty of this series is how the gameplay is kid-accessible with additional challenges for adult players.

It’s rich in content beyond the critical path and lots of incentives to scour every level for pick-ups and collectibles. It satisfies anyone who has that obsessive compulsive itch to max out all weapon stats and to earn all the trophies. It’s akin to collecting all those countless pegs in the LEGO video games - but the pieces have more practical value in Ratchet and Clank .

This new Ratchet and Clank lets fans to celebrate the past and gives newcomers a superb starting point. It’s a poignant reminder of Sony’s prolific period during the PlayStation 2’s era when it felt like a new franchise was born every few months. It says something when the only downside to Ratchet and Clank 2016 is that it will boost the sense of entitlement of those who want similar, equally gorgeous remakes of Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, God of War, you name it.

Verdict: Yes

Gears of War 4: Watch This Brutal Knife Execution

Gears of War 4: Watch This Brutal Knife Execution

A brief snippet of Gears of War 4 multiplayer gameplay has surfaced, showcasing the brand new and brutal knife execution featured from within the hotly anticipated title.

image description

There are few things more glorious than a gruesome and overly gory kill – at least, that’s strictly the case when it’s directed towards a monster within the Gears of War universe. The series is very well known for several things (with one being its tightly-knit cover-based shooting mechanics), but the name of the game for the franchise has always been near-obscene amounts of gore. Many longtime fans will be happy to know, then, that Gears of War 4 won’t be changing that up – despite word that it will be allowing gamers to censor the violenceat their discretion.

Leading up to the game’s Beta launch this April, The Coalition has been teasing fans with little snippets in a bid to get them excited for the shooter, and one of the biggest ways the newfound Gears developer went about doing this was through a cinematic trailer for Gears of War 4 called ‘Tomorrow’. While that piece played to the title’s narrative quite well, some new gameplay featuring the franchise-first knife execution has now surfaced to further tease fans.

To reaffirm what has already been said in this article, gore has not gone anywhere in.

The knife execution is said to be part of a major mechanic within the fourth numbered iteration of the now Microsoft-owned IP. As a counter to the Mantle Kick (jumping over cover and booting someone in the face), the knife execution allows players to grab enemies foolish enough to seek refuge on the other side of cover – making strongholds much more strategic in the process. This means a lot for dedicated users, and it should prove a huge tactical addition if Gears of War 4 pushes for serious and competitive gameplay – a la Halo 5: Guardians .

The only other brief gameplay video that has been released as of this writing is a rather gruesome execution involving the new Dropshot weapon. Those wanting to see that doozy of a finisher are encouraged to do so, but fans waiting for more will be happy to know that they won’t be doing so for much longer. The Gears 4 Beta is set to kickoff in the very near future, so there will be much more to look forward to for longtime fans itching to rev their Lancers once more.

Gears of War 4 arrives exclusively for the Xbox One on October 11, 2016.

Titanfall 2 Teaser Trailer Promises Full Reveal

Titanfall 2 Teaser Trailer Promises Full Reveal

EA teases the full reveal of Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall 2 in the coming months, hinting towards an announcement during June.

in the coming months, hinting towards an announcement during June. Expect more story and swords than ever.

It’s mid-April, which means that it’s prime season for pre-E3 teasers and general hype building. E3 may be two months away, but no publisher wants to wait until the last second and risk being overwhelmed by other projects. As it turns out, EA is at the head of the pack this year, and has today released a teaser for Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall 2 . Everyone’s favorite wall-running, mech-piloting shooter is back, and it will be just a little while longer before EA is willing to share more information.

Today’steaser comes in the form of a short video, but it’s thankfully more than just 30 seconds of text and ominous voiceover. Respawn graced fans with a bit of cinematic beauty, managing to reveal much more than just a title in the 44 second tease. At the heart of the video, however, is the promise of a reveal of Titanfall 2 at E3, with the official reveal of the game set to land on June 12 at the EA Play keynote, which starts at 1:00PM PST.

The secondary announcement in the teaser trailer is largely already known, but to have official confirmation is certainly a relief. Titanfall 2 is officially coming to PC, Xbox One, and – now joining the party – PS4. Respawn had talked about bringing the franchise to PlayStationafter the first game, but the gaming community knows it’s only official when official. Titanfall , of course, was solely on PC, Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Now to the more fun aspects of the trailer. Titanfall players will immediately focus in on the giant sword which the mech wields in the teaser trailer. Piloting a sword-wielding Atlas is perhaps the most exciting potential feature of Titanfall 2 ; in fact, some may argue that no other features are needed at all. The trailer seems to be setting up the mech to kneel down for the pilot to enter the cockpit, stabbing the sword into the ground for the process. Sadly there’s no actual sword combat shown – but that’s why they call it a teaser, right?

It may be a long stretch, but the teaser may also have implied the addition of story in Titanfall 2 in a very on-the-nose fashion. The opening dialogue in the teaser trailer, “so you want to be the hero,” is perhaps telling the audience that Respawn has heard its community’s request loud and clear. After all, another multiplayer-only title would have no need of protagonists. However, the original Titanfall did have a bit of storytelling between the multiplayer gaps, so perhaps that’s all that Respawn is teasing here.

Titanfall 2 is expected to release in 2016 for PC, Xbox One and PS4. Expect a full reveal during EA’s E3 keynote on June 12 at 1:00PM PST.

The Division Releases Incursions Preview Trailer

The Division Releases Incursions Preview Trailer

To promote the forthcoming Update 1.1 patch for its wildly popular military shooter, The Division , Ubisoft Massive releases a brand new trailer highlighting its features.

image description

With The Division ‘sreleasing tomorrow, April 12, Ubisoft Massive has decided to give fans a taste of all that will be available in the game once the free materials finally go live by showing the features off in a highly stylized trailer. The developer’s video is slickly produced, advertising that would-be Agents are set to experience much more than just a patch, but a full-fledged adventure with The Division ‘s next update.

While Ubisoft is pretty straightforward with the video’s title, calling it “Update 1.1: Incursions,” the studio seemingly pulled out all the stops with the trailer’s development by including explosive cinematic elements, as well as some teaser bits of gameplay from the title’s cooperative mission known as the Falcon Lost Incursion. Not to mention, in addition to featuring the aforementioned raid-like activity, The Division footage also reveals how loot trading in between teammates will operate, what Daily and Weekly Assignments will look like, and how Dark Zone supply dropsare going to work.

Perhaps most tantalizing, though, is the trailer’s brief focus on the update’s new gear sets and exotic weapons. According to the video below, Falcon Lost and future Incursions will bring about a lot of unique loot and weaponry, with fans being able to try out different gameplay styles to find out which loadouts will work best for them. If the trailer is to be believed, Update 1.1 will apparently include such sets as Tactician’s Authority for Support-based players, Path of the Nomad for Survivalists, Sentry’s Call for Snipers, and Striker’s Battle Gear for tank build characters.

Although the trailer for The Division ‘s Incursions Update contained a large amount of information, some details for the Update 1.1 patch weren’t covered. For instance, the gear score leveling systemwasn’t mentioned, nor were the increased costs for converting crafting materials and crafting High-End items. Nevertheless, it would have been hard for Ubisoft to have conveyed such additions and made them look interesting among all of the other action-based components of the trailer. However, a simple allusion to the guarantee of high-end loot drops for killing NPCs over Level 30in the video would have excited fans who weren’t aware of it being added as a feature.

For those fans of The Division anxiously awaiting Update 1.1’s release, the weekly maintenance downtime will include the patch’s 4.7 GB download, and it’s scheduled to begin at 12:00am PDT on Tuesday, concluding after approximately three hours. Prior to that, Agents would do well to start honing their skills, as it’s being reported that Falcon Lost has a difficulty so hard that even its developers can’t beat it.

The Division is out now and is available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Stunning New Gears Of War 4 Trailer Unveiled

Stunning New Gears Of War 4 Trailer Unveiled

After a 3-day countdown on the Gears of War website, Microsoft unveils a stunning new Gears of War 4 trailer during the season two premiere of Fear the Walking Dead.

image description

Last week was quite an exciting time for all Gears of War fans out there. After the reveal of the upcoming game’s cover art– featuring a Marcus Fenix cameo no less – a 3-day countdown clockwas released on the officialTwitter account. After 72 hours of heavy speculation over what was going to be revealed once the clock hit zero, we now have an answer: a stunning brand new Gears of War 4 cinematic trailer.

Shown tonight during the season two premiere of Fear the Walking Dead , this new Gears of War 4 trailer is 60 seconds of action and emotion, all while set to an unnerving cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s The Sound of Silence . Comprised of scenes from the past and present, the trailer features some intense scenes of an adult JD Fenixin the middle of a battle with some hard-to-see enemies, and some loving familial scenes involving a young JD, his father Marcus, and his mother, who we presume is Anya Stroud. Given that Gears of War 4 is set 25 years afterthe thought of Marcus passing on the Gears protagonist torch to JD is really hit home in this trailer.

For those wanting to see JD in action, as well as a cameo from Marcus and Anya, check out the new trailer right here.

While the Gears of War 4 trailer hit all the right notes by taking a leaf out of Dead Island ‘s emotional trailerhandbook, no new gameplay footage was shown. However, those 60 seconds were dark, intense, and were punctuated by a finish featuring the caption “The Nightmare Reborn,” signifying that Gears of War 4 is indeed going back to its horror-esque roots.

Seeing as how there’s only six months to go before gamers can get their hands on what is expected to be yet another Xbox graphical showcase, we can probably expect some great new gameplay footage soon – especially considering that the Gears 4 ‘s beta kicks off this month.

Gears of War 4 will arrive exclusively for the Xbox One on October 11, 2016.

Chance To Hit – The Psychology of Probability In Videogames

Chance To Hit – The Psychology of Probability In Videogames

Chance To Hit – The Psychology of Probability In Videogames
17 hours ago by Matt Sayer
How your brain tricks you into distrusting probability estimates
Do you ever feel like probability is a load of codswallop?

Do you ever feel like probability is a load of codswallop? That the odds are just a farce? That the 90% punctuality rate boasted by your train operator in no way reflects their actual performance, or that the 10% chance of rain forecast by meteorologists is never accurate when you leave your umbrella at home? Sometimes it seems as if these percentages are entirely fabricated, more wishful thinking than anything else. Truthfully, though, that's rarely the case.

In general, we humans areat distinguishing random results from ones that obey a pattern. A classic example of our folly relates to the shuffle algorithms used by Apple's various iDevices. Since the very first iPod, users havethat the random playlists are anything but. Multiple tracks from the same artist in succession can't be random, so the algorithm must be wrong.

The truth is not so simple. In a music library consisting of 200 distinct artists with on average the same number of tracks, the chance of a recurrence begins at around 1/200 and tends to increase the fewer tracks there are remaining. If you factor in skipping tracks, it's quite likely that over the course of two or three sessions, 200 or more songs will be served. Simple probability dictates that at least one recurrence is thus highly probable.

Once you extrapolate these odds to the approximately 400 million iPods- not to mention the additional use of iTunes software on computers and iPhones - the number of complaints no longer seems so damning. Nevertheless, the shuffle algorithm continues to cop the blame, while we cling to our faulty understanding of what randomness really is.

Memory is a fickle thing. Rather than recording everything, our brains typically store only those things that attract our focus: stimuli that evoke strong emotional reactions, or information we suspect will be useful in the future. These fragments serve as memory seeds; each time we reflect upon them, they sprout into slightly different scenes, the gaps filled with details influenced by the.

Using the tactical roleplaying game XCOM as an example, we might witness two consecutive misses on a 90% hit chance and baulk at the apparent error in the game's calculations. The truth, though, is that we have simply lost track of all the times the prediction proved correct. Thanks to the, which causes memories associated with negative emotions to burn brighter than their positive counterparts, the numerous 90% hits shrink to a mere handful, while the two misses bloom to a plurality.

In contrast, we tend to forget the times probability erred in our favour. When we hit a dozen 70% shots without fail, we think little of it, even though it's just as improbable as a 90% shot missing multiple times in a row. Because we are content, our emotions are not piqued, and the memory swiftly fades. Only when we get the short end of the stick do we question the reliability of the underlying systems.

One of the most notorious cognitive biases in the field of probability is the. It works like this: in a series of independent events, we tend to adjust our expectations based on past performance. For example, if we're flipping coins and we turn up five heads in a row, we typically expect the next five flips to land tails in order to balance the odds. But that's not how probability works. Every flip has the same chance of coming up heads or tails. The odds do not care about 'balance'.

Of course, over a large number of trials, the aggregate results will trend towards the underlying probability. This phenomenon, known as the, is often depicted by a bell-shaped curve on a graph, with the space below the curve representing the observed outcomes. The most common outcomes are clustered around the peak, also referred to as the expected value – 50/50, in the case of flipping a coin.

But normal distribution does not dictate the outcomes of individual events. A 70% chance does not mean every 10 trials will deliver 7 successes and 3 failures. And yet, we regularly behave like it does. Predictions like 'her luck is about to turn' and 'he's due for a win' prevail against the.

On the more mathematical side of things, there are two laws that play a prominent role in our problems with probability: the, and the.

The law of large numbers is fairly simple. Essentially, it states that the more trials we conduct, the closer the average of those trials will get to the underlying probability. Flip a million coins, and the heads/tails split likely won't be far from 50/50. Flip a billion, and the split will almost certainly be even closer.

At the other end of the spectrum, the law of small numbers stipulates that in a low number of trials, the chances of the results straying from the underlying probability are quite large. Flip just three coins and the most accurate split obtainable is 67/33. Flip ten, and even though it's possible to observe an even split, it's more likely that one of the two 40/60 outcomes will come up. Limited data sets often deviate significantly from the expected value, which makes them a poor source to rely upon – and yet, most of us do so on a frighteningly regular basis, even if we.

---

The laws of large and small numbers trap us in a catch-22. When we judge probability based on a small number of trials, such as a single mission of XCOM , the law of small numbers ensures at least some of our observations will stray from the underlying probability. These discrepancies average out as we conduct more trials, but since our brains pay more attention to surprises than confirmed expectations, our memories don't always reflect the true nature of events. In short, more data doesn't necessarily yield a more accurate conclusion.

That's why we yell at our computer screens when our XCOM soldiers miss their 90% shots, and we curse the local meteorologist when their prediction of a 10% chance of rain leaves us drenched on the sidewalk without an umbrella. Probability pervades so many facets of our lives, and yet we still frequently misunderstand how it works. With a firmer grasp on the concept of chance, our lives would be a lot more predictable.

Probably.

Dark Souls 3 boss: how to beat Pontiff Sulyvahn

Pontiff Sulyvahn is not an easy fight. This will be a stumbling block for many players.

The Pontiff wields two enormous swords. One deals fire damage, and he tends to use it in sweeping attacks. The other does magic damage, and is generally used for thrust. You’ll want armour that can protect you from both damage types, if possible, and a shield to match. This is a battle that really changes if you alter your build appropriately; slow and heavy tanks may benefit from a little holiday in something more agile.

The Pontiff fights like most of his knight buddies outside, but dialled up to 11. You could probably tough it out if things didn’t get worse in the second stage, when the Pontiff not only gains the ability to summon a phantom to aid him and distract you, but begins to indulge himself flapping about on wings, in order to unleash dive attacks.

One tactic that works well in the first stage, and to a lesser degree in the second, is to keep your distance so that the Pontiff rushes towards you. If you’re not too heavily equipped, this attack is fairly easily dodged by rolling forward and to the left or right. You can paddle the Pontiff once or twice, depending on the speed of your weapon and stamina reserves, then sprint to the opposite end of the arena. With any luck, he’ll repeat the same attack. If not, get to the other end of the arena and try again. It takes a while, but it’s doable.

In the second stage you’ll need to be more conservative with when you attack and when you just sprint away and try again, in order to ensure the phantom doesn’t foil your plan. You can try beating up the phantom, but it just comes back, and it’s usually easier to avoid it if you can get both figures doing the same attacks.

In general though, this is just really not a good time; apart from kitting yourself out in appropriate armour, there’s little you can do besides duel with finesse.

Well, you can summon, too – and this is a popular spot for it. There’s an NPC summon outside, Black Hand Gotthard , whom you should bring in at least once, because he gives you the By My Sword emote , which is rad. An extra body makes all the difference in this fight. Bring a friend. Bring two friends. Sulyvahn cannot cope with multiple targets and will regularly leave his bottom exposed for a paddling.

When he’s down, you’ll receive the Soul of Pontiff Sulyvahn and can activate the Pontiff Sulyvahn bonfire . This is a good time to head hack to the hub; Greirat will return to Firelink Shrine if you have completed Siegward’s quest so far, and Yuria will have something interesting to tell you if you’ve been chasing the third ending.

You’re tempted by that door beyond the Pontiff’s bonfire, but we’ll come to that. For now, we have other places to explore.

Sometimes we include links to online retail stores. If you click on one and make a purchase we may receive a small commission. For more information, go here.

2017 Hyundai Ioniq U.S. specs confirmed: Live photos and video

2017 Hyundai Ioniq U.S. specs confirmed: Live photos and video

Hyundai this year will be the first major automaker with a vehicle offering hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric options when its all-new 2017 Ioniq hits the market.

The car has already been shown outside the United States but now it’s made its local debut, which took place today at the 2016 New York Auto Show. Hyundai is showcasing all three versions—Ioniq Hybrid, Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid and Ioniq Electric—and has confirmed specs for the local market.

The Ioniq Hybrid and Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid are closely related. They both feature a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine as their internal combustion component. The Atkinson cycle engine features direct fuel injection and is mated with a single electric motor and 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. Powering the electric motor and storing recovered energy is a lithium-ion battery rated at 1.56 kilowatt-hours in the hybrid and 8.9 kwh in the plug-in hybrid.

Peak output in the Ioniq Hybrid is estimated to be 139 horsepower. Peak output for the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid hasn’t been announced but is expected to be higher due to the car’s more powerful electric motor. Hyundai does state that the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid should deliver more than 25 miles of electric range.

The Ioniq Electric sports a single electric motor delivering an estimated 120 hp. This motor is powered by a 28-kwh lithium-ion battery and linked with a single-speed reduction gear transmission, and enables a top speed of 75 mph. Hyundai estimates a range of 110 miles on a single charge.

All three versions feature front-wheel drive. All three also have a smooth with only a few carefully wrought contours implemented to minimize wind resistance. According to Hyundai, the coefficient of drag is a very low 0.24.

The Ioniq’s main rivals are the Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Prius. However, Hyundai has strived to make the Ioniq the most fun to drive. For example, dual-clutch transmission on the hybrid models should provide a sportier feel for shifts compared to the CVTs used on many hybrids. The Ioniq’s new platform also makes use of lightweight materials, sports sophisticated multi-link suspension at the rear and features a low center of gravity.

Beyond the advanced internals, Hyundai has designed the Ioniq to be much like a conventional commuter car. For example, there are  plenty of convenience features including a 7-inch screen in the instrument cluster, a wireless charging pad for mobile devices, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Storage space measures up to 26.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

Safety measures include seven airbags and a host of electric driver aids such as blind spot, lane departure and cross traffic warning systems; autonomous braking; and adaptive cruise control that maintains a safe gap with other vehicles. A tire pressure monitoring system is also included.

2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is a droptop fastback dandy: Live photos and video

A retractable hardtop Miata may not have been a total surprise by the time the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF pulled on to the stage at this week's 2016 New York Auto Show.

After all, Mazda Europe leaked pictures of the car before the official introduction, and they were picked up by several outlets. However, Tuesday night’s reveal was surely unexpected as those early pictures suggested a possible Miata coupe.

New Mazda North America chief Masa Moro introduced himself and quickly made way for the power folding hardtop Miata. Instead of a compact folding hardtop like the last-generation car, the 2017 Miata gets a folding hardtop with fastback-style rear pillars that remain in place with the top up or down. It gives the car either a coupe-like or targa-like look, and this may be as close as we ever get to the long-desired Miata coupe.

The folding hardtop, which can be deployed at speeds up to 7 mph, is a single piece and hides in the trunk without taking any extra cargo room compared to the cloth top.

According to Mazda, the RF stands for “retractable fastback” and not necessarily “really fast.” The same 2.0-liter inline-4 powers the MX-5 RF and softtop alike, and makes 155 horsepower in both applications. Mazda didn't say how much weight the retractable top will add, but it’s likely to add more than 100 pounds in motors alone.

2017 Acura MDX debuts with new look, NSX-derived hybrid system: Live photos and video

2017 Acura MDX debuts with new look, NSX-derived hybrid system: Live photos and video

Acura’s popular MDX has gained a new look inside and out for 2017, but the big news is what you can't see: a newly optional hybrid powertrain related to the setup used in the brand’s NSX supercar .

. Acura bills the vehicle the MDX Sport Hybrid, an obvious nod to its NSX cousin.

The particular setup, known as Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, features a 3.0-liter V-6 gas engine and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission mated to a trio of integrated electric motors. In the 2017 MDX, the layout of the system is the reverse of what you find in the NSX. A similar setup also features in Acura's RLX Sport Hybrid.

ALSO SEE: 2017 Nissan GT-R gets new look, 565 horsepower: Live photos and video

What really sets the hybrid apart from its rivals is that one electric motor works with the engine to provide power for the front wheels, while the remaining two electric motors motivate the rears and form a "through-the-road" hybrid all-wheel-drive system. Because of the electric motors, Acura was able to integrate electrified torque vectoring.

Horsepower of the hybrid MDX peaks at 325 ponies, a 35 hp improvement to the regular MDX and its 3.5-liter V-6. Meanwhile, fuel economy is up 7 mpg in the city. Overall, Acura estimates the hybrid to be rated at 26 mpg combined, 25 city, and 26 on the highway.

To cope with the additional performance, tuned suspension is included as well as a drive modes selector with a new Sport+ mode added to the existing Comfort, Normal, and Sport options.

The MDX Sport Hybrid joins an otherwise revised lineup that gains the brand’s new “diamond pentagon” grille that debuted at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show on the Acura Precision concept. New LED fog lamps and jeweled headlamps are augmented by chrome rocker panel trim, a new rear bumper, and twin tail pipes poking out of a revised rear bumper. The MDX’s 20-inch alloy wheels have also been redesigned.

More features are added as standard, including an electric parking brake with automatic brake hold, automatic high beam headlamps, updated SirusXM 2.0, and a quartet of 2.5-amp USB charging ports.

Step up to the Advance trim level and the MDX now offers second row captain’s chairs with an integrated center console.

Acura says that the non-hybrid 2017 MDX will hit the market this summer with the MDX Sport Hybrid following later in the year.

Toyota’s long victory lap for the Corolla this year began at the 2016 New York Auto Show with the debut of its 50th Anniversary Special Edition and sporty-ish XSE models. The Corolla hasn’t really been accused of getting many hearts racing over its 50-year history, but with more than 40 million examples sold since 1966, the most-popular car on the planet has nothing to apologize for in regard to its unprecedented run.

ALSO SEE: 2017 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid promises 22 miles electric range, 120 mpge: Live photos and video

The 2017 Toyota Corolla 50th Anniversary Special Edition will be limited to only 8,000 cars in the U.S. (a pittance compared to the car’s annual global production of 1.5 million) and goes on sale this fall. The SE-based 50th Anniversary car will sport unique 17-inch gray wheels, black seats with “Black Cherry” stitching and matching dark red dash panels, and unique exterior colors including Black Cherry, “Blizzard Pearl,” and, yup—Classic Silver.

Toyota also announced in New York that the 11th generation of the Corolla—which is in its waning years before a major overhaul soon—will have a slightly different lineup that more closely mirrors bigger-brother Camry. The Corolla gains XSE and XLE trims—similar to the Camry—which will likely consolidate some of the small Corolla’s big rundown of 12 different trims at some point this year. The XSE will get an aggressive front fascia (with a Dr. Doom-type under bite) and both the XSE and XLE will be available with a suite of safety packages that’ll help bring it in line with the rest of the compact pack.

Mechanically, the 2017 cars will be identical to the current model—1.8-liter inline-4, 132 horsepower—though the Corolla hasn’t ever been a “numbers” car. Well, not those numbers anyway.

This Week’s Top Photos: The 2016 Detroit Auto Show Edition

The 2016 Detroit Auto Show is now well and truly over, at least for the media, so here’s a look at some of the highlights.

The 2016 Detroit Auto Show is now well and truly over, at least for the media, so here’s a look at some of the highlights. Starting things off is the 2017 Lincoln Continental, which goes on sale later this year as the replacement for the aging MKS. Though toned down from last year’s Continental concept, the production version still has plenty of presence and an interior built better than any Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] product we’ve seen in a long time. We're glad to report that Lincoln finally appears serious about its comeback.

Lincoln’s comeback won’t be an easy road, especially with though competitors like the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which also made its debut in Detroit. The tech-loaded Teutonic sedan is the most advanced offering in the Mercedes lineup and has an interior that wouldn’t look out of place in cars costing double or even triple what the E-Class retails for. Our only gripe is that the exterior styling is a bit too derivative.

It wouldn’t be a proper Detroit Auto Show without some awesome pickups and this year’s event didn’t disappoint in this regard. One of the favorites was the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew. Like all SuperCrew versions of the latest F-150, the Raptor SuperCrew features four full-size doors and generous space for rear-seat passengers. This one also packs a V-6 EcoBoost engine powerful enough to outshine some V-8s.

Another popular pickup was the Nissan Titan Warrior. The wild concept is based on the diesel-powered Titan XD and hints at what a Nissan rival to the F-150 Raptor above could be like. Will a production version happen? Only time will tell.

Finally, Ford had a new version of its GT supercaron show in Detroit and this one is much closer to the production version due out later this year than any of the cars we’ve seen yet. Eight Questions With Acura Precision Concept Designer Michelle Christensen

Eight Questions With Acura Precision Concept Designer Michelle Christensen

One of the highlights of the 2016 Detroit Auto Show was the Acura Precision Concept .

. A design study for future Acura sedans, the car debuts the company's new Precision Crafted Performance mantra and points to a more adventurous and stylish future for Honda's upscale brand.

The car's aggressive outward appearance was created by exterior project leader Michelle Christensen at the company's Torrance, California, design studio, where Christensen also acts as the principal design leader. In Detroit, I sat down with Christensen to discuss the Precision Concept and how it will affect the future of Acura styling.

The Precision Concept is sized like an RLX. Could it be your idea for a replacement for that model?

This car is basically our vision model. Coming off the momentum of the NSX and this Precision Crafted Performance [idea], we really wanted something not just to show the world, but to inspire our studio internally, what we're going to do with the future lineup of sedans. You will see elements of this inspiring all of our future sedans. So, it's not any one model in particular. It's a lot lower and wider than the current RLX for sure. Our Acura exterior mantra is Alluring Modern Edge. And the alluring part is all about proportion. We know that that's extremely important to luxury buyers, so we really pushed our limits with this car to really inspire low and wide proportions, and a nice stance, a nice emphasis on all the wheels, and convey performance through design.

Acura Precision Concept, 2016 Detroit Auto Show

The most noticeable aspect of the car is the grille, and it appears that the notorious Acura "beak" will be gone.

I know it was somewhat controversial at some point, but I think everybody started to really recognize it [the 'beak"] as distinctive. I think a lot of people started to relate to it and appreciate it. But once we had this momentum of the Precision Crafted Performance direction, we wanted to go back in and reevaluate. Does everything match Precision Crafted Performance? When we looked at the grille, it didn't match. We wanted something that conveyed more of a performance image. We had the plenum in the front that looks like it's blocking what is normally an air intake. That started the conversation of, OK we need to redo the grille. So, we went through hundreds of proposals and this one seemed every Acura--it's still kind of a pentagon so it's a nod to what we've already established--but it just has a nice clean shape to it and it really conveys performance by letting air in through the grille.

I think it depends on the vehicle, especially as you work your way up to the light trucks you would want a less aggressive point to it. But that center line break has always been an Acura characteristic. This car is a little bit more of a caricature of everything. We still want to work that into all of our vehicles, so we are working with engineering to develop the underlying components to help us achieve that on the outside.

It doesn't look like there is room for airflow in this grille. It is pretty much closed with numerous diamond-shaped elements to it.

We want to lure you in so there are all these details up close. All those diamonds are actually opened inside and the vertical slats are open as well. There are also two lower side intakes. Again, it's little bit of a caricature because we really want to inspire the designers internally. So we had a lot of fun with it, and there are a lot of third-read details in there. The intent is to be able to have all of that open for performance.

Yesterday, we ran through a list of everything that's changed on the Ford GT for production from the original car shown last year in Detroit. Now we have video of the new Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] supercar going into race mode courtesy.

ALSO SEE: Here's What Changed On The Ford GT For Production

As you can see in the video, when the new GT goes into race mode the car gets lower and the active rear wing goes up. We reached out to Matt Leaver from Ford Performance Communications in regards to the GT's race mode. He informed us that the wing goes up as the vehicle increases speed. There's also clearly an air brake mode for that wing.

We would imagine some of the car's other settings are also made more aggressive in race mode. For example, things like transmission programming, steering weight, traction control, stability control and suspension settings should all become more extreme.

As previously reported, the production GT will be nearly identical to the concept shown last year. Powering the new GT is a twin-turbo V-6 that will likely have around 630 horsepower and 539 pound-feet of torque. Power will be sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The new GT will go on sale later this year with a price tag of possibly $400,000.

Here's What Changed On The Ford GT For Production

Here's What Changed On The Ford GT For Production

Last month a photo of what was supposedly a production-intent Ford GT surfaced on the Internet.

surfaced on the Internet. Turns out, that photo was of a production-intent GT buck. As in, it wasn't a real car, just a design buck. That was then, this is now. Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] quietly placed a real working GT that is, for all intents purposes, ready for production in its booth at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show.

To be more specific, a source told us this white-on-red example is supposedly the first VP1 prototype complete with production-ready design and equipment. We've reached out to Ford for comment and confirmation. Ford confirmed the car is production intent, but said it's still a development vehicle and as such, things are subject to change. Ford was unwilling to confirm what level of build it is, whether it is a VP1, or even what VP1 officially stands for.

ALSO SEE: Hellcat-Powered Jeep Grand Cherokee Here By End Of 2017: Official

Matt Leaver from Ford Performance Communications told us this white-on-red GT is fully street legal and could be driven right off the show floor. Though, he quickly followed that by saying the final calibrations, tuning, and software are still in development.

So what's changed from the car we were shown last year in Detroit?

We asked this very question to Jamal Hameedi, Ford Performance chief vehicle engineer. In a few words, not a ton has changed.

It's the small details that add up. The side view mirrors are now larger, and legal. There are reflectors on the front fenders, and the headlights have changed slightly. You'll never notice the changes to the headlights as the design itself is the same. The fans that sit below the mesh grilles in the scooped out hood are larger, and now actually function properly. The front splitter now has two air inlets in the center to help direct airflow, and the rear diffuser has been updated for better downforce at speed. The rear taillights look the same, but they are now street legal, and the housings no longer have GT etched into them. Lastly, the engine now sports a plastic cover that proudly reads "EcoBoost."

It's also worth noting that the carbon fiber splitter, side skirts, and rear diffuser are all glossy carbon fiber, while the car shown last year had matte carbon fiber. We were told that matte carbon fiber will be stock but this glossy look will be optional.

For those who might have forgotten, the new GT will be powered by a twin-turbocharged V-6 that will likely have about 630 horsepower and 539 pound-feet of torque. Power will be sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Enthusiasts are excited the GT is coming back, and it's no secret why given the legendary status of the GT40s of the 1960s and the reborn Ford GT of a decade ago.

Stay tuned for more updates as we near the GT's on-sale date later this year.

Ford Motor Company’s [NYSE:F] new F-150 Raptor performance pickup truck has been confirmed to go on sale this fall, as a 2017 model, and at the launch there will be both the standard two-door model as well as a four-door SuperCrew. It was at last year’s Detroit Auto Show that we first saw the new Raptorand at this year’s show Ford rolled out the Raptor SuperCrew.

Like all SuperCrew versions of the latest F-150, the Raptor SuperCrew features four full-size doors  and generous space for rear-seat passengers. The wheelbase measures in at 145 inches, which is up 12 in on the two-door model.

ALSO SEE: Nissan Shows Off-Road-Oriented Titan Warrior Concept

Mechanically, the two variants are virtually identical. Both come with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine that Ford says will outmatch the previous Raptor’s 6.2-liter V-8’s 411 horsepower and 434 pound-feet of torque. We hear power in the new Raptor may be up around 450 hp—and don’t forget that the new model is considerably lighter thanks to an aluminum body. Ford says it's up to 500 lb lighter than its predecessor.

2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class preview

2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class preview

Mercedes-Benz’s E-Class is described by the automaker as the “core” of its brand, and with the current model enjoying sales of almost 50,000 units last year in the United States alone it’s easy to understand why. Now there’s a new generation, one that’s more luxurious, more feature-packed and better built than ever before.

The new E-Class made its world debut this week at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show and will be in local showrooms in the summer, as a 2017 model. We’ve already seen the car thanks to several leaks but along with these new photos there’s also plenty of info to divulge.

MUST SEE: Buick Surprises With Avista Concept In Detroit: Live Photos

The mid-size luxury sedan segment is one of the most hotly contested in the industry and the new E-Class will have its work cut out for it considering all the new rivals. Jaguar just renewed its XF while BMW will soon unveil a new 5-Series. Other new players include the Volvo S90 as well as the Lincoln Continental.

2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (E400)

Size, luxury are up

So what does the new E-Class bring to the table? The design is a familiar one, as we’ve already seen it on the S-Class and C-Class models that the E-Class sits between. The new car is slightly longer than the one it replaces, measuring in at 193.8 inches, or about 1.7 in longer than the predecessor. The wheelbase is also up by 2.6 in over the predecessor to a new length of 115.7 in.

The real star here is the cabin, though. The interior design looks like it’s been lifted straight out of the pricier S-Class. Sitting at the top of the dash are a pair of horizontal 12.3-in LCD displays that butt together, one to serve as the instrument cluster and the other for the infotainment system. Also new are Touch Control surfaces, located on the steering wheel. Like on a smartphone, these surfaces respond precisely to horizontal and vertical swiping movements, allowing the driver to control the entire infotainment system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel.

Even more autonomous capabilities

We’ve already had an early look at some of the driver aids. They are grouped under the new Drive Pilot heading and include some autonomous modes. The adaptive cruise control known as Distronic in Mercedes-speak allows the car to follow another vehicle at speeds of up to 130 mph. The autonomous Steering Assist feature also works up to 130 mph, when conditions are ideal, and can actively intervene to prevent an accident at up to 81 mph, even if road lines are unclear or non-existent, such as at a construction site.  Finally, automatic lane changing for highway driving has also been included.

Buyers of the new E-Class also get a remote parking function where they can control from outside using a smartphone app, for instance when a spot is very tight. There is also a vehicle-to-object (V2X) communications system that exchanges information via a built-in mobile-phone transponder with other vehicles that are appropriately equipped, giving drivers earlier warning about hazardous situations ahead that are not yet visible. Two examples would be an accident ahead or the tail end of a line of stopped traffic.

Reiterating its commitment to the Make in India initiative, South Korean electronics major LG on Thursday launched two locally-made smartphones and targets to manufacture 1 million phones in India.

The company will be manufacturing phones at its Noida facility in partnership with GDN Enterprises. The two smartphones – the LG K7 LTE and LG K10 LTE, priced at Rs. 9,500 and Rs. 13,500 respective -were launched by Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Thursday.

LG is the latest entrant to start manufacturing of phones in the country, which has launched ‘Make in India’ initiative. Several device makers, including Micromax, Lava, Gionee, OnePlus, and Xiaomi, have started assembling their devices in the country.

India is one of the fastest growing smartphone markets globally and device makers are keen to set up manufacturing units here to cater to the burgeoning demand.

“We want to tap the huge potential for smartphones in the country and the K-series will be the first ones to be manufactured in India,” LG Electronics India Managing Director Kim Ki-Wan said in New Delhi.

He added that the company is optimistic over the new models to drive its growth in the smartphone segment in India. Prasad said it was an occasion of personal satisfaction for him to see companies setting up base in India for electronics manufacturing.

2016 BMW M2 Priced From $52,695

The first ever M2 is the star of BMW’s stand at this week’s 2016 Detroit Auto Show.

is the star of BMW’s stand at this week’s 2016 Detroit Auto Show. And it was at the show where we learned that the handsome sports coupe will be priced from a very reasonable $52,695, including a $995 destination charge, when it goes on sale this April.

With its powerful straight-six engine, compact size and rear-wheel-drive dynamics, there’s nothing really like it on the market. The car reminds us a lot of the E36 and E46 M3s of old and is a welcome change in a world of compact performance cars with four-cylinder engines and either front- or all-wheel-drive configurations.

ALSO SEE: 2016 Chevy Camaro SS Breaks Into The 9s: Video

In case you’ve forgotten, the M2 packs a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six engine delivering 365 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque (369 lb-ft with overboost). The standard transmission is a six-speed manual but BMW is offering a seven-speed dual-clutch unit as an option. BMW quotes a 0-60 mph time of 4.2 seconds and a limited top speed of 155 mph.

At this price point, the car’s main rival is the Mercedes-AMG CLA45. Audi’s RS 3 is also a worthy rival but isn’t sold in the United States. Buyers may also want to look at the Chevrolet Camaro SS.

Hellcat-Powered Jeep Grand Cherokee Here By End Of 2017: Official

We’ve known since about June of 2015 that a Jeep Grand Cherokee equipped with the same supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 found in the Dodge Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcat duo was coming—and now Jeep has made it official.

When asked at this week’s Detroit Auto Show whether Jeep was able to drop the Hellcat engine into the Grand Cherokee, the brand’s CEO Mike Manley admitted yes and said such a vehicle was coming to the market before the end of 2017. You can see the exchange in this video from YouTube user Brian Makse .

Now, whether the vehicle will wear a “Trackhawk” badge instead of the familiar “SRT” labeling, as is rumored, is still up in the air, though we think it’s a likely move given Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ [NYSE:FCAU] moves to make SRT a Dodge-exclusive division.

We’re also still in the dark on whether the Hellcat-equipped Grand Cherokee will feature the Hellcat engine’s full 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, or come with a slightly detuned output to help preserve its all-wheel-drive system.

A market launch before the end of 2017 suggests the vehicle will arrive as a 2018 model. Unfortunately, we hear FCA plans to retire the Hellcat engine after the 2018 model yearwhich would mean the super SUV may be offered for just one year.

Note, the regular Grand Cherokee is set to receive one final facelift, most likely for the 2017 model year. This is to help keep the vehicle looking fresh until a completely redesigned model is introduced for the 2019 model year... More details when we have it.

This week at the Detroit Auto Show, Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] confirmed plans to launch four all-new SUVs over the coming years to cater to strong demand for high-riding models—and one of them will be a Lincoln. With SUVs now outselling sedans in the United States, the move makes sense for Ford.

We’re not just talking redesigns of existing models. Speaking with USA Today , Ford product chief Raj Nair said the four SUVs will be new additions to the lineup.

Ford wasn’t willing to comment on the identity of any of the SUVs but we already have a few clues.

For the Ford brand, expect to see the subcompact EcoSportadded, perhaps in next-generation form. Another is likely to be a new Broncoto take on the likes of the Jeep Wrangler. This one will be twinned with a mid-size Ranger pickup, with both vehicles to start production at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant beginning in 2018.

The identity of the third Ford-branded SUV isn’t clear but we do have an idea of what the Lincoln model might be. There have been rumblings that Lincoln is set to receive a large SUV with third-row seats based on a new multi-billion-dollar platform code named the D6. This SUV is expected to replace the ungainly MKT and be targeted at buyers looking for a more car-like model as opposed to the truck-based Navigator. The Aviator name has been rumored.

Acura Examines Stylish Future With Precision Concept: Live Photos And Video

Acura Examines Stylish Future With Precision Concept: Live Photos And Video

How often can you say that Acura wowed the crowd with its styling?

How often can you say that Acura wowed the crowd with its styling? Sure, the 2017 NSX is a looker, but it's a supercar and we've seen it for so long now that it no longer inspires passion. At this week's Detroit Auto Show, Acura unveiled the Precision concept as an expression of the brand's DNA of "Precision Crafted Performance."

Developed by Acura's California design studio, the Precision concept is a design study that Acura says will shape the direction of the brand's future products. If that is indeed the case, then the most important aspect is the new "Diamond Pentagon" grille. It represents a new face for Acura and the end of the "beak" grille that has been panned by so many critics. The concept's face also features "Jewel Constellation" LED headlights, while the rear gets floating LED taillights.

ALSO SEE: 2017 Lincoln Continental Lands At Detroit Auto Show: Live Photos And Video

Acura says the design emphasizes high-contrast details and the intersection of modern, sheer surfaces and muscular, organic sculpting. That may be design speak, but especially on the car's flanks you can see how modern, creased surfaces interplay with more organic, rounded shapes. Metallic trim pieces along the lower sills and a sharp indent at the bottom of the front door work to create contrast. The fenders also flare front and rear to make room for the large 22-inch wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

The concept also employs a design theme Acura calls "quantum continuum." It means that structural and design elements from outside the car flow into the inside. For instance, those lower sill trim elements appear as a cantilever to the rear seats. And at the rear, the design of the center high-mounted stoplight flows from outside to inside the car.

The  inside of the car is highlighted by a double-layered instrument panel, hand-crafted wood speaker grilles, and thin "floating" rear seats that Acura says have the look of modern lounge furniture. The small steering wheel has shift paddles and controls for the Integrated Dynamics system. There is also a floating instrument panel, a head-up display, and a large, curved center screen that is operated by a floating touchpad.

At 204 inches long, the Precision concept is a large car, just a few inches shy of an Audi A8 or BMW 7 Series. The 122-in wheelbase is in the full-size car range, too, and at 84 inches, the width is greater than that of a full-size sedan or even a Chevy Tahoe. However, the car is just 52 in tall, which is the height of a Nissan 370Z. Those low, wide, and long lines give it definite presence and let the design play out over a large canvas.

Given its dimensions, could the Precision concept point to a new full-size car from Acura? Probably not. This is a pure concept car. However, a bold, stylish car based on this concept, especially with rear-wheel drive and at least 400 horsepower, would be a smart replacement for the slow-selling RLX. And if the rest of the lineup can take on the Precision concept's bold design themes, maybe Acura could bolster its relatively weak sedan sales.

LG G5 teardown shows it’s possible to include removable batteries in unibody phones

LG G5 teardown shows it’s possible to include removable batteries in unibody phones

Teardown specialists,聽 iFixit disassembled LG’s new flagship G5 and had a good look at its innards.

By tech2 News Staff /  08 Apr 2016 , 15:04

disassembled LG’s new flagship G5 and had a good look at its innards. The phone has easily replaceable parts with a modular design. The G5 also uses a聽new aluminum alloy, LM201, developed in partnership with Korea Institute of Industrial Technology. The modular design and the new alloy together forced this iteration of the flagship to be slightly bulkier than the G4.

The battery can be popped out of the phone with a push of a button. Removable batteries make smartphones more environmentally friendly as they are easier to recycle. It also reduces e-waste. The end cap module of the battery has some components inside it as well. The battery has a capacity of 2800 mAh, which is a decrease from it’s predecessor, which had a capacity of 3000 mAh. The front cover of the end cap module is made out of plastic, but that is just a tiny portion of the phone, sois still valid.

scored a repairability score of 8, which was the same as the score for the G4. While a lot of other phones are as repairable, only a few scored better. The modular components means that it’s easy to replace faulty parts with new ones. The only downside iFixit found was that the fused display assembly聽makes it expensive to replace the parts if the LCD or the glass breaks.

2017 Volvo S90 U.S. Specs Revealed: Live Photos And Video

2017 Volvo S90 U.S. Specs Revealed: Live Photos And Video

Following the successful launch of its XC90, which this week was named 2016 North American Truck/Utility of the Year , Volvo’s next major product offensive comes in the form of the 2017 S90 sedan , on show this week at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show.

Capturing the beauty of the original P1800-inspired concept coupe of 2013and combining it with the more practical body of a sedan, the S90 certainly has the looks necessary to be competitive in the mid-size luxury sedan segment.

Its powertrains are impressive as well. For the United States, there will be three engine choices available: a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in a T5; a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in a T6; and a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four working with an electric drive system in a range-topping T8 Twin Engine.

2017 Volvo S90

These powertrains are shared with the XC90 but the range-topping S90 T8 Twin Engine has been confirmed with 410 horsepower, which is up 10 horses on the XC90 T8 Twin Engine. Meanwhile, the S90 T5 and S90 T6 are estimated to deliver 240 hp and 302 hp, respectively.

All S90s will come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Because of its gas engine/electric motor combo, ‘through-the-road’ hybrid all-wheel drive will be standard on the S90 T8 Twin Engine. Lesser S90 variants will come with front-wheel drive standard with the option of a mechanical all-wheel-drive system.

Peering inside, it’s clear the designers have taken cues from the success of the XC90 but have also taken the luxury to a higher level. You’ll find real wood and metal detailing plus a digital instrument cluster and Bowers & Wilkins audio. Note, the model pictured features the range-topping Inscription trim, so not all of these will be standard.

What will be standard, though, is a semi-autonomous system known as Pilot Assist. The original version of Pilot Assist made its debut on the 2016 XC90 and allows the vehicle to accelerate, decelerate, come to a complete stop and steer in road conditions with clear lane markings based on the car in front up to speeds of 30 mph. The version in the S90 offers the same functionality but can operate at speeds of up to 80 mph, meaning highway driving. It also no longer requires a car in front to track.

Also with the S90, Volvo is also expanding its City Safety object detection system to now include a large animal detection function. When an object is detected in the road ahead, the system provides warning and brake support to help avoid a collision.

Key rivals for the S90 include the Acura RLX, Lexus ES, new Lincoln Continental and the mid-size sedans from the three major German luxury brands.

Sales of the S90 start later this year. Note, Volvo will soon reveal a wagon variant reviving the V90 nameplate. This model hasn't been confirmed for the U.S. but we should know more soon as it's expected to debut in March at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.

New Dodge Viper Possible, Says Sergio Marchionne

New Dodge Viper Possible, Says Sergio Marchionne

Production of the current Dodge Viper is scheduled to an end in 2017 and right now there doesn’t appear to be any plans for a successor .

. That doesn’t mean we’ll never see a Viper again, at least according to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles [NYSE:FCAU] CEO Sergio Marchionne.

At a press conference at this week’s Detroit Auto Show, attended by Automobile , Marchionne said there was the possibility a new Viper could be launched, and he hinted that such a car could be based on a shared platform as opposed to a bespoke design like the current model.

“Given the architectural development within the brand, there is a possibility that a new version of the Viper may surface,” Marchionne is quoted as saying. “Whether it will surface in time [to replace the current car] is unclear to me.”

Despite its giant-killing performance, Dodge sells less than a 1,000 Vipers per year, which is simply too low to support its specialized production at the Conner Avenue Assembly plant in Detroit. But a new Viper sharing a platform and production facilities with other FCA vehicles, like Maserati’s new sports car, may prove viable.

However, with a long list of more mainstream models due over the coming years, we wouldn’t count on FCA launching a new Viper anytime soon. That just means the current one will be much more collectible.

Jeep Wrangler-Based Pickup Is Finally Heading To Production

Jeep Wrangler-Based Pickup Is Finally Heading To Production

Last fall, we heard rumblings that Jeep was finally taking a hard look at producing a Wrangler-based pickup .

. Now we finally have word from the top brass that the Jeep truck is on its way to production reality. As first reported by, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles [NYSE:FCAU] CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed that the Wrangler-based truck is coming.

DON'T MISS: Hellcat-Powered Jeep Grand Cherokee Here By End Of 2017: Official

Speaking at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, Marchionne stated that the new truck will be built in Toledo, Ohio alongside the next-generation Jeep Wrangler. This all-new Wrangler is expected to arrive sometime towards the end of 2017, so we shouldn't expect the truck before then. We'd guess that you'll have to wait until 2018 for the Jeep with a bed to show up.

Regardless, this is great news as it's a vehicle that many have been pining for over the last few years. Jeep kept trotting out truck concepts like the one above, and the brand has a history of building great small trucks. In a world filled primarily with full-size and some medium-size pickups, a smaller Jeep pickup is a welcome entry.

CHECK OUT: New Dodge Viper Possible, Says Sergio Marchionne

We're also still waiting on the return of the Grand Wagoneer. Jeep has said that it is bringing out a three-row full-size SUV that will most likely wear the Grand Wagoneer name. We don't expect a change of course there, as a vehicle larger than the Grand Cherokee should play well in the premium SUV segment. Plus, there's no way they'd ditch the Grand Wagoneer name, seeing as how much Jeep loves its own heritage. Rightly so, of course.

European Competition Commission finalising antitrust charges against Google

European Competition Commission finalising antitrust charges against Google

0
Google may soon be facing antitrust charges in EU for its comparison shopping service and is being investigated on whether the way it handles Android use in third party phones constitutes of unfair trade practice.聽Politico reports requests from lawyers for documents from competitors of Google is a sign that charges are going to be framed, and聽notes that Google is at most liable to pay up聽10 percent of parent company Alphabet’s annual revenue.

By tech2 News Staff /  19 Apr 2016 , 10:14

The process has started with aagainst Google, that Google can respond to. If the European Commission is not satisfied with the reply, then the antitrust聽litigation will proceed. Google’s comparison shopping service is under scrutiny to check if it has been聽hindering competition by artificially placing their own service in a more prominent location.

The statement notes that Google’s first attempt at a comparison shopping service, Froogle failed, whereas Google Product Search and Google Shopping succeeded. A suggested remedy by the European Commission is that Google should apply the same penalties to its own service that it applies to competition, and not give any preferential treatment to its services.

Aagainst Android was also opened at the same time. The purpose of the investigation is to check if Google has been hindering the proliferation of rival operating systems, applications or services. There are three focus points of the investigation. Whether Google has been forcing device manufacturers to install only Google’s applications on Android, whether Google has taken steps to make sure that manufacturers do not use a forked version of Android, and if Google has been killing competition by bundling Google applications together in Android implementations.

LG Display to reportedly supply car displays for Tesla Model 3

LG Display to reportedly supply car displays for Tesla Model 3

0
03 Apr 2016 , 10:47
LG Display will supply information displays for Tesla Motors’ new Model 3 sedans, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said, grabbing a key contract for centre consoles from another supplier.

Tesla said on Thursday over 130,000 people had ordered the electric car in a couple of hours although it is more than a year away from production. With a $35,000 starting price – less than half Tesla’s Model X – the vehicle is critical to the Silicon Valley automaker’s growth plans.

The order is a feather in LG Display’s cap as it seeks to expand further into auto electronics which offer higher margins and more stable earnings prospects than consumer products.

The Model 3 prototype features a huge, tablet-like information screen on the center console, reflecting the trend towards bigger in-car displays that offer more features.

“LG Display is a sole supplier for the 15-plus inch centre display of Model 3,” said the source, declining to be identified as he was not authorised to speak on the matter.

Another company currently provides centre information displays for Tesla’s Model S and Model X, he added.聽An LG Display spokeswoman declined to comment. A Tesla spokeswoman did not have immediate comment.

Seven Questions With Camaro Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser On The 2017 1LE

Seven Questions With Camaro Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser On The 2017 1LE

At the Chicago Auto Show last week, Chevrolet introduced the 1LE package for the sixth-generation Camaro .

. This is the third 1LE package in the company's history and this time it is offered for the V-6 as well as the V-8. We were fans of the fifth-gen Camaro 1LE package, and we loved the 2016 Camaro SS so much that we named it the Motor Authority 2016 Best Car To Buy. Combine a great car with a great track package, and we're hoping the 2017 Camaro 1LE will be a winner.

ALSO SEE: 2017 Camaro SS 1LE Might Be Faster On Track Than Mustang GT350

Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser was on hand to celebrate the launch. We sat down with him to talk about the new 1LE package.

The development of the previous 1LE was part of a program that was meant to fix a car that was fundamentally flawed, correct?

When we did the fifth-gen, you gotta remember it was out of the market for eight years. So, when it came back and we showed it at the auto show, it was such an overwhelming hit that no one had ever seen so much attendance and press coverage of a concept car. So Bob Lutz said don't mess with the concept, just release it that way. Well, it's gotta be a performance car, and we had a terminal understeer problem. We got called out by a lot of media that we had understeer. We faced up to it, and we committed that we'd improve it. On the way to developing the ZL1, we came up with the Yellow Jacket, or the 1LE. We hoped to get it approved as the 1LE because it harkened back to the third-gen 1LE that was a brake kit, then a fuel pump improvement, and then a fifth-gear improvement, and then a stab bar, a prop shaft, and a weight reduction. So, we came up with the 1LE kind of on the way to the ZL1.

2017 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE, 2016 Chicago Auto Show

2017 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE, 2016 Chicago Auto Show

Enlarge Photo

What are the differences this time around and why do a 1LE for the V-6?

The difference with the sixth-gen is, we had the trademark now or the DNA to do a sixth-gen [1LE] from day one. We also heard a lot of customers saying, "Man I love the 1LE, but I've got a V-6." So we knew from day one that we wanted to do a V-6 1LE. Our strategy was to design top-of-the-heap suspension parts and brakes for the V-8 1LE, and then take the parts from the SS and throw them on the V-6.  So, having that knowledge of what the 1LE was going to be in the sixth-gen made it that much easier to plan ahead with parts sharing amongst the six and the eight. There's a difference when you come up with a 1LE in the middle of a life cycle and when you plan for one from day one.

The suspension had to be gone through thoroughly. Every part had to be assessed, and if it was going to help the car go faster we changed it. The sixth-gen gets the benefit of having technology as well, so the Driver Mode Control and the interaction with the Performance Traction Management is an improvement over the fifth-gen. The fact that we are 230 pounds lighter and have 30 more horsepower all help as well. The conscious decision to go after technologies that we've perfected on Corvette like the electronic LSD, that's an awesome feature to add to a Camaro. Bringing the Magnetic Ride Control from the previous ZL1 to the SS and 1LE is also great. All of that enabled the car to perform better on the track.

We've met that challenge. The delta between the fifth-gen SS and 1LE is similar to the sixth-gen SS and 1LE. On a two-minute track it's three seconds faster than the fifth-gen 1LE, which is a lifetime.
