Jaguar won’t do wagons anymore, says design chief

Jaguar won’t do wagons anymore, says design chief

Jaguar is done with wagons, the automaker's head designer says.

"The [wagon] market is massively shrinking," Jaguar Design Director Ian Callum told Automotive News (subscription required). "I’m very sad about it but it's a very difficult market to justify."

Jaguar scrapped its last wagon, the stunning Sportbrakebased on the previous generation XF, when the all-new XF was introduced last year. Prior to that, Jaguar offered a wagon version of the X-Type compact sedan. Incidentally, it was the only Jaguar wagon ever sold in the United States.

Callum admitted that Europe is the only major market for wagons, and even that is dwindling due to increased interest in SUVs. The automaker's home market is Europe's second largest, but it is not historically as enthusiastic about wagons as central and northern Europe.

The U.S., meanwhile, has long been an SUV market. And emerging markets for Jaguar like China and the Middle East are similarly enthusiastic about high-riding vehicles when extra practicality is required.

To its credit, Jaguar has recently introduced its own SUV, the F-Pace.

For now, it appears that Jaguar will focus its efforts instead on growing the F-Pace—and potentially adding another, smaller SUV at a later date.

Facebook testing sectioned news feed, redesigned app: Report

Social media website Facebook may soon add a news section to its Android and iOS smartphone apps that may look like Facebook Paper — a standalone mobile app created only for iOS.

Facebook confirmed to Mashable tech website that it is testing the new, sectioned news feed, in addition to the current format, though it is unclear if the feature would ever get an official launch.

Some screenshots surfaced on Twitter on Friday, showing that a new layout of the mobile app that highlighted multiple news sections, with topics such as world and us, sports and food.

Whoah. Massive change to the Facebook news feed. Anyone else seeing this? pic.twitter.com/EA3dFQRS6y

鈥 Tom Critchlow (@tomcritchlow) April 15, 2016

“People have told us they would like options to see more stories on Facebook around specific topics they are interested in,” a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“So we have been testing a few feeds for people to view more and different stories from people and Pages based on topic areas,” the spokesperson added.

The report said the move would encourage users to get more news from Facebook rather than other sources like Twitter or Google News.

Feds seeking forfeiture of luxury cars being exported to China

Feds seeking forfeiture of luxury cars being exported to China

Back in 2012, a couple in Memphis, Tennessee found out the hard way that U.S. Customs and Homeland Security agents, not to mention automakers themselves, are paying close attention to what's leaving American ports.

The feds in 2012 seized a dozen BMW X5s being exported by Yifan Kong and his wife Erxin Zhou. The vehicles were being transported to China where they command significantly higher prices. Kong and his wife came to Memphis from China about a decade ago and had set up a lucrative business of exporting premium cars. Asreports, several years on, the feds are seeking the forfeiture of the 12 BMWs plus 35 other seized cars linked to the couple .

CHECK OUT: EPA to scrap proposed race car emissions rule

What they're doing isn't illegal, a lawyer representing the couple says. Yet a federal judge in Manhattan, near where the cars were seized at the port of Staten Island in New York, may rule otherwise. The ruling is expected to come any time now.

Hired help used to purchase thousands of cars

Prosecutors say that the use of "straw buyer"s to conceal the couple's plan to export cars to Asia is among several deceptive tactics they used. Over the past several years the couple had exported thousands of vehicles in this way. Documents show $80 million worth of cars were exported by a business related to them in 2012 alone.

Exporting a brand-new car from the United States isn't quite as simple as slapping stamps on it and dropping it off at a port. Instead, car manufacturers ask their dealers to verify that recently-sold cars aren't being purchased with the immediate intention of exporting them.

Lexus has released a single teaser shot of the car, which we’re expecting to go on sale this fall as a 2017 model. Comparing the teaser with a shot of the 2016 IS, we can see that the headlights have been tweaked and the front bumper too.

We’re not expecting any major mechanical mods as the IS just saw its engine lineup revised for the 2016 model year. However, we could see some new tech features like an updated infotainment system and extra electronic driver aids.

Further details will be released as we approach the April 25 opening day of the Beijing Auto Show. To learn about some of the other vehicles set to appear, head to our dedicated hub.

Facebook said that it will not use algorithms聽to influence voting in the US presidential election this November. A report byshares questions submitted during the company’s聽internal Q&A for employees with CEO Zuckerberg.

The report聽shared a screenshot of聽an internal poll that Facebook employees were purportedly using to decide what questions to ask Zuckerberg at a meeting in March. One of the聽questions submitted were, “What responsibility does Facebook have to help prevent President Trump in 2017.” It is speculated that Facebook聽could downplay stories and posts related to Trump in its New Feed, potentially putting a damper on his campaign.

“I hear fearful voices calling for building walls and distancing people they label as 鈥榦thers,” Zuckerberg said, never referring to Trump by name. “I hear them calling for blocking free expression, for slowing immigration, for reducing trade, and in some cases, even for cutting access to the internet.”

A聽Facebook spokesperson told, “ Voting is a core value of democracy and we believe that supporting civic participation is an important contribution we can make to the community. The Environmental Protection Agency intends to drop language from a bill thatcould be interpreted to include strict emissions regulations for road cars converted to race use.

, the EPA plans to remove wording that had been attached to a bill otherwise regulating medium and large-duty truck carbon emissions. No formal statement has been issued from the EPA, however.

ALSO SEE: Second Aston Martin Vulcan arrives in the U.S.

The bill became controversial after the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA), whose members are aftermarket vehicle modifiers, pointed out that it would prohibit modifications made to emissions systems for cars converted to dedicated track use.

The EPA, however, indicated that it had always banned tampering with emissions equipment. Its wording was aimed at aftermarket firms that sold parts to disable emissions controls, the EPA said. It should also be noted that the wording in question was in a paragraph about motorcycles and snowmobiles.

Modifying emissions controls for cars used on public roads has long been illegal, though enforcement is generally left up to states. Many states and local jurisdictions, however, do not regularly measure vehicle emissions.

The EPA faced considerable backlash from Republican lawmakers and from the public regarding the rule.

Most recently, Patrick McHenry, a North Carolina Republican, proposeda bill to dismantle the EPA's wording.

Capcom stated that they will make additions and enhancements to the system in the future. The April update will also include matchmaking improvements, including looser restrictions on finding an opponent, which should help U.S. players get into matches. The update does not have a concrete release date yet.

Diesel and gas, it's time to learn the difference

Diesel and gas, it's time to learn the difference

No, this isn't a story diving into the different models in the Volkswagen family.

No, this isn't a story diving into the different models in the Volkswagen family. Instead, it's our friend Jason Fenske of Engineering Explained examining the differences between gasoline and diesel engines.

It goes a bit deeper than spark plugs and glow plugs. The primary difference between the two types of engines is related to the air-fuel mixture and how it's compressed. Gasoline likes to combust with the helping hand of your friendly spark plug while diesel prefers to mash the fuel and air and compress it on its own.

CHECK OUT: Piston rings and blowby explained: Video

Of course, there's a whole lot more going on inside each type of engine. They follow the same basic four-stroke combustion process, it's just that the different fuels make power parties in different ways. If you already know about the difference in air-fuel ratios, you might be surprised to learn a bit more about the differences. Did you know that the diesel engine typically doesn't use a throttle body? When you press down on the gas you're letting in more fuel and not more air.

See, you can learn something new every day. And that's the beauty of this video series. So sit back, hit play, and learn something new about your favorite mode of transportation...until the Hyperloop actually becomes a reality. (And we'll turn to Engineering Explained for an explanation of that one too).

An upgraded console isn’t a foreign concept to gamers, with the Xbox 360 Elite and PlayStation 3 Slim both being released several years after the original console.

Only 3 years later, Sony plans on releasing a new and improved PlayStation 4, which currently has the code name PlayStation Neo.

According to Giant Bomb‘s sources, the pricing has yet to be revealed on the new console; with a rumoured pricing of $399.

This October every game shipping for the PlayStation 4 will be required to have a base mode and a NEO mode, taking advantage of the upgraded hardware in the console.
With the new upgrades, Sony is expecting the NEO mode to adjust nicely to a 4K resolution. It has suggestions on how the developers can achieve such a spectacle, but reminds them that the frame rate must meet or exceed the original PlayStation 4 frame rate.

Battlezone 98 Redux, the remaster of the PC classic from the 90’s, released on Steam today. It will run players $19.99.

The developers of the original Battlezone are behind the remaster. The original was a real-time strategy/first-person shooter hybrid. Rebellion, Battlezone’s publisher, acquired the rights to the franchise in 2013. In addition to announcing the game’s launch, Rebellion also said that it has more titles coming under the “redux” branding, but did not give any more information.

Rebellion is a U.K.-based studio that is well known for its Sniper Elite franchise. The newest game in the franchise is Sniper Elite 4, which is coming out sometime later this year for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Battlezone 98 Redux is the first third-party developed game that Rebellion has published so far. The original PC version of the title received a sequel in 1999, and also received a Nintendo 64 port on 2000. The game received its name from Atari’s arcade title from the 1980’s.

1966 Le Mans-winning Ford GT40 restoration video, part one

1966 Le Mans-winning Ford GT40 restoration video, part one

If it's not the most important race car in Ford's history, it's in the top three.

If it's not the most important race car in Ford's history, it's in the top three. Ford GT40 Mk. II chassis number P1046 was the car that officially won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. It was the culmination of Ford's effort to beat Ferrari at its own game, and not only did P1046 win, it was part of a one-two-three finish for the Blue Oval.

You would think that Ford stashed P1046 in a museum or its archives after drivers Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon achieved Henry Ford II's goal of beating the brand that had spurned a buyout attempt a few years earlier. That's not the case. Instead, the car became a transmission test mule, and saw untold modifications over the years.

ALSO SEE: Ford GT documentary part one, The Decision: Video

Rob Kaufman, owner of classic car dealer RK Motors Charlotte, bought ol' P1046 in August 2014, and saw that, while it was in very good shape (the pictures here show how it looked prior to restoration) and in fact had done some vintage racing, something was off. It wasn't in the configuration of its greatest achievement, the 1966 Le Mans win, and that needed to change.

With that in mind, RK Motors looked for the best shop to restore the car to its Ferrari-beating guise. That search led to Rare Drive, Inc. of East Kingston, New Hampshire. Rare Drive owner Mark Allin had previously restored a Ford GT40, so he would already be familiar with the subject matter. "Mark Allin has an encyclopedic knowledge of the Ford GT40 and has a true enthusiast's passion for historical accuracy during the restoration process," said Joseph Carroll, president of RK Motors LLC.

CHECK OUT: How The Ford GT Race Car Differs From The Road Car

To commemorate the restoration of P1046, RK Motors is putting together a series of videos on the car's history and its restoration. Here in part one, entitled "#P1046: The Legend of Le Mans," RK goes heavy on the history. Watch the video above and you'll learn about the reason Ford got into international racing in the first place, Carroll Shelby's role, and the controversial finish of the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. You'll also meet Allin, the man who is actually performing the restoration.

And better yet, there is commentary from GT40 historian Ronnie Spain, all delivered with a delightful Scottish accent.

We will follow the project in the coming weeks. The plan is for it all to culminate in June at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where the completed car will be unveiled. Ford, which is marking the 50th anniversary of its historic win by competing in the race with the Ford GT, should appreciate the presence of this legendary car.

Intel to cut up to 12,000 jobs as PC industry swoons

Intel to cut up to 12,000 jobs as PC industry swoons

Image: Reuters
Intel said it would cut up to 12,000 jobs globally, or 11 percent of its workforce, as it refocuses its business towards making microchips that power data centres and Internet connected devices and away from the declining personal computer industry it helped found.

Tech companies including the former Hewlett Packard Co and Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) have reorganized in the face of the PC industry decline. Many new tech users around the world turn to mobile phones for their computing needs, and corporations increasingly rely on big machines rather than desktop models to run their businesses. Global personal computer shipments fell 11.5 percent in the first quarter, tech research company IDC said on Monday.

Intel, the world’s largest chipmaker, lowered its revenue forecast for the year. It now expects revenue to rise in mid-single digits, down from its previous forecast of mid- to high-single digits.

Intel’s shares were down 2.2 percent at $30.90 in extended trading.

Most of Intel’s factories are in the United States, although it did not identify where cuts would be focussed geographically. It said it would record a pretax restructuring charge of $1.2 billion in the second quarter and expected annual savings of $1.4 billion per year starting mid-2017.

The company also said Chief Financial Officer Stacy Smith will move to a new role leading sales, manufacturing and operations. Intel said it would begin a formal search process for a new CFO.

Smith said that Intel now expects the PC market to decline by a percentage in the high single digits in 2016 versus a prior forecast of a mid single-digit decline. Declines in China and other emerging markets are also leading to greater than anticipated reductions in worldwide PC supply chain inventory, Intel Chief Executive Brian Krzanich said on a conference call.

“PC demand, at least in the eyes of Intel, is expected to be weaker than the industry originally anticipated,” said Angelo Zino, an equity analyst at S&P Capital Global Market Intelligence.

The Santa Clara, California-based company has been focussing on its higher-margin data centre business as it looks to reduce its dependence on the slowing PC market. Intel has also made inroads into the mobile devices market, although competitors Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O) and Samsung Electronics Co(005930.KS) dominate there.

Intel said in a statement the job cuts would be carried out by mid-2017 and the restructuring would “accelerate its evolution from a PC company to one that powers the cloud and billions of smart, connected computing devices.”

Sales of products for the data centre and the Internet of things accounted for 40 percent of revenue and the majority of operating profit, it added.

Raymond James analyst Hans Mosesmann, who rates Intel “under perform” said the problems leading to the job cuts were likely more about Intel than the broader tech industry.

“The bigger issue is the restructuring and will it be enough for the company to properly adapt to a changing environment where cloud and IoT competitive dynamics are quite different,” Mosesmann added.

On a per share basis, the company earned 42 cents per share, in the first quarter, up from 41 cents a year earlier.

Net revenue rose to $13.70 billion from $12.78 billion.

Non-GAAP net revenue came in at $13.80 billion, compared with analysts’ average estimate of $13.83 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Adjusted earnings of 54 cents per share topped Wall Street forecasts of 48 cents.

Up to Tuesday’s close, Intel’s shares had fallen 8.4 percent this year, compared with a slight gain in the broader semiconductor index .SOX.

Audi to play big role in upcoming "Captain America: Civil War" flick

Audi to play big role in upcoming "Captain America: Civil War" flick

Audi's product placement folks must be high-fiving each other over the automaker's big role in the upcoming Marvel film, "Captain America: Civil War."
Referring to the yet-to-be-released film as a "blockbuster," Audi says that it supplied  2017 Audi R8 V10 plus coupes, 2017 SQ7s, 2017 A4s, and 2016 A7 Sportbacks for the movie.

Audi's Prologue Concept car, a wagon that will likely preview its next-generation Allroad, will also make an appearance in the film.

Captain America will drive the automaker's new SQ7 crossover, which makes its film debut, while Iron Man will show up once again in an Audi R8. Captain America is played by Chris Evans, while Robert Downey, Jr. handles the role of Iron Man.

Audi is, of course, no stranger to the silver screen. In recent years, the automaker has made a massive product placement push. Its cars have shown up in everything from independent films to blockbusters, and Audi is known for keeping a large fleet of "influencer" cars loaned out to celebrities at a moment's notice.

In a teaser commercial released today, the Audis really stand out against a crowd of otherwise dull-colored 1990s European-market cars.

"Captain America: Civil War" hits theaters May 6, 2016, in the United States.

GameStop partners with three more studios to form new publishing label

GameStop partners with three more studios to form new publishing label

GameStop has announced that the retailer is launching a new publishing label named GameTrust.

And the company is not fooling around – they’ve already lined up some big names to work with through the label, including Ready At Dawn Studios ( The Order: 1886 ), Frozenbyte ( Trine ), Tequila Works ( Rime ) and the previously announced Insomniac Games( Ratchet and Clank, Sunset Overdrive ).

Through these partnerships, GameStop will create what they call “non-traditional game publishing” by helping bring these studios’ games to digital retailer and GameStop’s store shelves.

“GameTrust will revolutionize the game development and distribution process by offering a new way for independent developers to create and introduce their own IP to a broad gaming audience and for gamers to discover and enjoy exclusive new video game experiences,” the company said.

GameStop has stressed that the company will remain external from any creative development from any of the titles that come from these studios, but rather will continue to focus on “exclusive real estate within its online and physical stores to offer gamers access to new games available across multiple platforms, including digital, physical, console, PC and VR.”

GameTrust will work with even more developers and games that the company plans to announce in the near future.

Plays of the Week

From sprint sensations to frantic farewells, these are the most exciting, silly and downright crazy plays in the sport world this week.

PT1M56S 620 349

Adam Scott is too busy to try and win a gold medal at the Rio Olympic Games.

In a move that shines some perspective on the newly added golf tournament, the world number explained that his packed schedule, as well as increasingly busy family life, meant he was unable to commit to being part of the Australian team in Brazil.

"My decision has been taken as a result of an extremely busy playing schedule around the time of the Olympics and other commitments, both personal and professional," Scott said in a statement issued via his management company.

"I have informed the Australian team captain (Ian Baker-Finch) and relevant authorities, who are understanding of my position and I wish the Australian Olympic team the very best of luck in Rio."

Golf will return as an Olympic event for the first time since 1904 but with it has come the debate about the value of the tournament and the place of highly-paid professional athletes at the Games.

Jason Day has already declared his availability and if Scott had chose to join him, it would have given Australia a huge chance at gold in the traditional individual stroke play event.

That spot may now fall to someone like Marc Leishman, who at 34 is Australia's next highest ranked golfer on the world standings. Marcus Fraser, Steve Bowditch and Cameron Smith are among the other options.

While some of the sport's brightest stars, including American world number one Jordan Spieth, have put their weight behind the event, it continues to polarise, much like the Olympic tennis tournament.

Scott has hardly been glowing in his previous discussions about playing, so it should come as little surprise he has decided to pull the pin. His main focus has always been golf's four majors, with August often allowing players a short break in a busy schedule.

The tennis event has slowly grown in popularity with leading players and golf may yet do the same. Still only 35, Scott may rethink his stance should be still be among the world's leading players in 2020.

"We're obviously disappointed Adam will not play because he's one of the best players in the world but we understand his position," Golf Australia chief executive Stephen Pitt told the body's website.

"This means one of our other elite players will get the chance and we're more than happy that we will field a very strong team in Rio.

"We will have at least four great golfers compete for Australia in Brazil and we're very excited for what that means to golf in this country and more broadly around the world."

One-off Porsche 959 convertible up for sale

One of the ultimate icons of 1980s, the Porsche 959 stands out as much for its technological advancements as it does for its excess.

What's more than a 959? A one-off 959 convertible, like the white one that has recently hit the market in a small northern Italian town near Venice.

A listing on Classic Trader reveals the car is at ADR Motorsport, a firm that deals only in Porsches. While no price is listed, it's safe to say that the 959 will trade for major money—just like non-modified 959s have recently.

The car was delivered new to German race car driver Jürgen Lässig, who drove Porsche 956s and 962Cs in the World Sportscar Championship in the 1980s and early 1990s.

As the story goes, Lässig was piloting the 959 at up to 140 mph on the German Autobahn when an Audi pulled out in front of him. The 959 ended up on its roof and was deemed a total loss, but rather than being parted out it was snatched up by a customizing firm.

Microsoft Windows’ dreaded BSODs (Blue Screen of Death) has been part and parcel of the Windows experience since time immemorial.

Microsoft Windows’ dreaded BSODs (Blue Screen of Death) has been part and parcel of the Windows experience since time immemorial. Finally, more than 20 years since its inception, the BSOD gets an update that’s actually worth writing about. Reddit user,, first reported that he spotted QR codes in Windows 10’s BSODs in the latest Insider Preview Build.

A QR code is a type of matrix barcode that can be programmed to hold information. Scanning it with an appropriate tool/app reveals the information. In its implementation of the QR code, Microsoft says that the codes will help support technicians identify and fix problems at a much faster rate. The codes will also make it easier for readers to scan and share the error messages directly with technicians.

ArsTechnicathat the QR codes aren’t currently implemented yet, and that all scanned codes lead to the same page with explains how to deal with blue screens. Considering that the codes are only part of an Insider Preview anyway, that’s an oversight we can easily forgive.

Speaking of BSODs, remember the time Bill Gates encountered a BSOD when demoing Windows 98 to the public?

Danny Willett wins US Masters

Englishman dons the green jacket after defending champion Jordan Spieth imploded on the 12th hole on the final day at Augusta.

PT1M28S 620 349

If the comparisons with Lionel Messi at Manchester Airport did not inform Danny Willett that he had been elevated to a new level of sporting fame or, indeed, the paparazzi who have "sat outside my house waiting for me to take the bins out", then final confirmation came from the PGA Tour.

Willett was slightly shocked to awake yesterday to find out he had joined the American circuit, as displayed all over the front page of its website. In truth, he had yet to sign the forms to make it official. But the Tour's haste to announce its capture underlined its desire to have the Masters champion as a member.

No rules have been broken, or even bent for Willett, but the upshot is he has been given a shot at the $US10 million ($12.84 million) bonus at the Tour Championship in September. And despite the fact he was intending to join the PGA Tour in 2017 anyway - and so split his time between there and the European Tour he so cherishes - things are happening at a whirlwind pace for the 28-year-old.

For now, Willett is trying to adjust to his dramatically altered life in Rotherham, which has, inevitably, been granted further ecstatic disruption with the arrival of his baby son, Zachariah, the week before the Masters. Sitting down at Rotherham Golf Club, overlooking the course which honed his talents as a teenager, Willett's eyes portrayed those of a sleep-deprived father, not to mention a recently crowned major-winner.

"We're getting a couple of hours [of sleep] a night," Willett said. "Changing nappies, early-hour feeds. It's just back to normal life, really. Although my biggest taste of reality was at Meadowhall [shopping centre] a few days ago. Zach peed on my leg while I was feeding him. Sitting outside Boots while [his wife] Nicole's in there, he went all the way through his nappy, through his vest and on to my jeans. That's a really good look [for a Masters champion]."

And believe it, people were looking. Intently. They have been since he arrived back in Manchester less than 48 hours after becoming Britain's first Masters winner this century.

"That was bonkers. The airport staff said they'd not seen that many press there since Messi and Barcelona came over," Willett said. "And then there was the 'pap' outside the house. That must be the most boring job in the world, sat there waiting for me to put the bins out. I think they were trying to get a picture of the little man and Nic. That's why I did that photo-shoot with Nic and Zach last week, so we could return to some form of reality and not have to get us a bodyguard out all week."

Willett is not the first supposedly "overnight" sporting success to struggle with the flipside of transcending the borders of celebrity. The son of a retired vicar, Willett has spent all of his life in his locality, apart from his years at Jacksonville State University. He was one of them, but he has discovered they think rather more of him now.

"That's the most difficult thing, normal things aren't so normal any more," he said. "You go to Meadowhall and people want a picture, you go out for dinner with Nic and people want an autograph. At a tournament, you appreciate that you sign for fans, you meet the sponsors; that's part and parcel of what you do, that's our business. But when it leaks into normal home life, that's one of the things I'm going to have to get better at.

"I can see why a lot of the top athletes go into hibernation, behind closed doors, it's very invasive. But then, five years ago, if Tiger [Woods] had walked past me, I'd have asked for a picture. That's just our nature as humans."

Willett is plainly in the transition mode - "you think it's sunk in and then you find yourself walking past the Green Jacket and smiling" - and this is why the next three weeks before his competitive reappearance at the Players at Sawgrass can be considered as important. If possible, he must accept the hero worship and then dismiss its relevance.

At least he has finally waded through that mass of congratulations notes.

"I've had lots from great people from around the world and I'm not going to name-drop them all," he said. "But Rory's [McIlroy] meant a great deal. I'm not going to say exactly what he wrote, because there were a few swear words, but it was 'mega', 'fantastic down the stretch', 'it's brilliant we'll have the Masters winner at the Irish Open [where McIlroy is host]'. Robbie Fowler's was nice as well and Kenny Dalglish has invited me to Liverpool's Europa League semi-final in a couple of weeks when they play Villarreal. I hope they don't get me on the pitch - I just want a few drinks and to watch the match."

Willett wishes it to be simple this next fortnight or so. He has yet to enjoy a full family get-together and "intends a few beers with the lads and then try and get some time where Nic and I lock the door, turn the phones off and just be a normal family".

But then, when he finally puts his hands back on clubs which have remained untouched since that magical Sunday at Augusta, it will be back to the range with convictions renewed and a determination not to chase the money for money's sake.

He will only play at the Tour Championship if he earns enough points at Sawgrass and the ensuing three majors to qualify in the top 30. "And if I don't then so be it," Willett said.

"I've been pretty strict on my schedule and when I have my weeks on and off. To change that now just to chase cash or whatever wouldn't be right"

So America can wait until 2017 to see more of him as he sticks to his carefully-planned schedule. No "blinded by the bright lights" for this Yorkshireman.

"You have to be careful that you don't get too complacent - you've still got to work hard," Willett said. "Fortunately, I have good people around me that will keep kicking me up the bum, making sure I don't lose that focus and start slacking. Mike [Walker] and Pete [Cowen] as coaches would never let me do that - and Nic would never let me do that at home."

Chatbots have been around a lot longer than you think

Chatbots have been around a lot longer than you think

Mark Zuckerberg announced the advent of chatbots at F8 2016
The technology world has decided to embrace chatbots in a big way.

The technology world has decided to embrace chatbots in a big way. After Microsoft, Facebook has placed heavy bets on chatbots. And the rest of us wonder how this really impacts us. It聽may be a technological innovation, but its impact and influence isn’t restricted to the tech world. We’re all set to undergo a transformation in the way we interact with machines 鈥 hardware and software.

What exactly are聽bots, again?

Bots and robotics are similar, yet different. I agree, that doesn鈥檛 make any sense whatsoever. Heard of聽? Vaguely the Steven Spielberg kind, but not exactly.聽In the 鈥s and early 鈥s, robotics was the coolest thing around. Our generation of millennials witnessed human-machine interaction while growing up. And so when millennials go on to head tech companies, the products they create seem to be naturally inspired by the thought of AI and its evolution.聽The year 2000, which was supposed to bring in the advent of machines, didn’t quite make that mark.

Fifteen years have passed by, and machines haven鈥檛 yet harmed our lives to the extent we聽had envisioned.

Chatbots are different though

So when Microsoft announces a whole new bouquet of chatbots and bots-related tools that developers could聽use, it does mean a big deal. Add to that, a couple of weeks later, Facebook also announces that chatbots are going to be a significant development over the next decade at Facebook.

What happened to real people?

When we first heard of the idea of chatbots, we couldn鈥檛 help but wonder. What happens to our interaction with real people? Imagine being frustrated due to bad customer service, and having a bot resolving your queries! Without the yelling, or the raising temper. The most you could do is bang the keys on the keyboard. Or your touchscreen! Soon, all those hundreds of customer service executives would be down to a handful.

WeChat

When Microsoft announced its plans to open up聽chatbots as a platform, it mentioned WeChat and how the bots in the Chinese messaging platform are huge. In fact, bots on WeChat help users order everything from a cup of coffee from a localised聽retail chain modelled around Starbucks to even!

More Details Emerge On PS4.5, Which Reportedly Won't Get Its Own Games

More Details Emerge On PS4.5, Which Reportedly Won't Get Its Own Games

Last month, we told you that Sony was working on a new, improved model of the PS4 , what was basically a PS4.5. Now Giant Bomb is reporting some further details on this new console , and it all sounds…a bit weird.

Their reportsays Sony is referring to the upgraded hardware as NEO (something we’ve also heard), and that it will “feature a higher clock speed than the original PS4, an improved GPU, and higher bandwidth on the memory.”

Some rumoured specs, from Giant Bomb’s report.

Now here’s where it gets interesting. The new specs mean that there’ll be two types of PS4 games available; those that can run on any PS4, and those that take advantage of the newer console’s extra power. Rather than divide the market, the report says that from October 2016, every single PS4 game that’s released must have a “base mode”, which would work on older consoles, and a “NEO Mode” for the new machines (which would put put in 4K, etc). Developers wouldn’t be allowed to make “NEO-only” games, nor could they “separate NEO users from original PS4 players while playing on PSN.”

The NEO wouldn’t replace the current PS4, but “will exist alongside of it and use the same user environment”. And while there’s an October deadline for NEO-compatible releases, that doesn’t mean the new console will be out that month.

Finally, for games that have already been released, Giant Bomb’s report saysolder titles can also create “NEO mode” versions if they’d like, they just have to go back in and release it as a patch.

DOOM Is Now Bethesda's Second Most Hated Game On Steam

DOOM Is Now Bethesda's Second Most Hated Game On Steam

There’s a lot of advantages to an open beta.

There’s a lot of advantages to an open beta. Gamers get the chance to test something before release; developers get the chance to fix bugs and find out how robust their servers are.

Unfortunately, it also gives gamers the chance to absolutely pan the living snot out of your game. And that’s what happened to the new DOOM over the weekend, making it Bethesda’s second-lowest rated game on the service.

At the time of writing the reception has been nothing short of savage. At the time of writing, only 37% of the 11,717 reviews are positive for iD’s upcoming shooter. The scathing score makes the DOOM beta the second most hated item Bethesda has published on Steam, with Fallout 4’s Wasteland Workshop DLC having the dubious honour of being the worst.

Many complaints from regular punters have centred on the fact that the modern DOOM doesn’t really represent the ideals of an arena shooter. Uninspired and derivative are two of the most consistent cries, with users on social media and forums remarking that the game borrows too much from Call of Duty and not enough from older iD titles.

The warning screen for NVIDIA users on launch didn’t leave a great impression either.

— DeviantXS (@DeviantXS) April 15, 2016

Mind you, this is a beta and you’d hope that gamers factored that in. Complaints about a 60fps cap were a bit off the mark too, considering the developers announced the frame rate would be unlocked for the full release.

I wasn’t a fan of the closed beta, but it should be acknowledged that there were plenty of improvements since then.

The performance was slightly better on my PC, with the frame rate consistently hovering around 60 this time. The movement speed was noticeably increased. Games of Warpath were much easier to find, which made the matchmaking experience more enjoyable. And despite pings hovering around 60-70ms at their absolute best, the overall performance was quite smooth. Even a field of view slider was introduced for the open beta, which makes a huge difference for some, and there was an option to hide damage numbers.

Given how many tweaks were made in such a short period of time, I can’t help but wonder whether iD were already debating them internally and wanted to wait for the public’s reaction before acting. Nevertheless, they’re just some of the things I noticed — and figured the developers deserve some credit for responding so quickly to feedback.

But that wasn’t enough for fans to overlook the absurdity of the Revenant, the peculiarities of the audio, the lack of weapon damage, the truly awful announcer, the presence of loadouts, auto targeting on the Gauss Cannon (a one-shot kill weapon), and the lack of audio feedback in general.

The new DOOM launches May 13. Bethesda will undoubtedly be hoping the reaction then dwarfs the reception right now — and the next time they do an open beta, don’t be surprised if comments and reviews are disabled altogether.

Hackett breaks silence over plane scandal

Swimming Australia won't be rushed into a decision on whether to pursue the idea of using Grant Hackett to assist the Australian team in the lead-up to the Rio Games as one of the sport's rising stars continued to back his presence on pool deck.

Hackett has yet to surface after his in-flight incident on Sunday, in which he was intoxicated and questioned by Federal Police following an altercation with a passenger. No charges were expected to be laid and he had yet to front the media.

Much of the focus now surrounds what role, if any, he might play heading towards Rio. The sport's governing body wasn't speaking on Tuesday but has said ensuring Hackett was back to full health remained its top priority.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), through Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller, said it would only determine whether Hackett could be accredited for the Games if he was nominated by Swimming Australia.

"That's up to Swimming Australia how they would potentially use him. We'd have to wait to see what Swimming nominated to us as we do with any athlete or official that any national federation nominate to us. We would then determine whether that was appropriate use of accreditation or not," Chiller said.

Given the context of his most recent incident, having Hackett associated with the team would appear unlikely but not impossible. Even in the light of his plane incident, he retains the respect of fellow swimmers, most of whom appear far more forgiving than the general public.

Breaststroke great Leisel Jones has already pleaded his case should Hackett be available to assist with the Rio preparations, while 17-year-old freestyler Kyle Chalmers said he didn't think any less of the 1500m champion in the wake of his aeronautical antics.

Chalmers will make his Olympic debut in Brazil after finishing second to Cameron McEvoy in the trials in Adelaide and said Hackett remained a source of inspiration.

"He's still a massive role model for me and I'll stay in touch with him over the next few months hopefully and we'll see what happens," Chalmers said.

"He's a great guy to have around the team I'd love for him to be able to come away with the team and be a mentor for us. (He's got) so much knowledge."

The notion of Hackett being a team mentor for Rio was only in its formative stages, with Hackett at the time also juggling a potential contract wth Channel Seven as an on-air talent on the pool deck.

The 35-year-old had embraced the idea immediately after he missed his final chance to make the team, while Swimming Australia chief executive Mark Anderson and coach Jacco Verhaeren were also open to the prospect.

But even if it had have been undertaken, there was no guarantee that role would have stretched to Rio and may have just included duties on the domestic front as swimmers prepared for pre-Games meets and a Grand Prix event to be held in Brisbane.

The Australian Swimmers Association has reached out to Hackett to try and assist with his transition to life outside of the pool. It has offered the same help for all of those who missed Olympic selection at the Adelaide trials.

The ASA's president, former Olympic swimmer Marieke D'Cruz, said it could not condone Hackett's behaviour but knew of the pitfalls of trying to adjust to life outside the fast lanes.

"Given this, it is easy to understand how someone like Grant Hackett, who is so likeable and professional on pool deck can fall to pieces outside of the pool. It is something, though, as a sport, we are now acutely aware of," D'Cruz wrote on TheHuffington Post .

Earlier, Swimming Australia president John Bertrand played down rumours that Hackett's entire comeback was a PR stunt designed to earn him a television contract. Hackett made the team for the world titles in Russia last year and presented in strong shape in Adelaide.

"He gave it a shot to be part of the swim team," Bertrand said. "That was it. For the pure reasons."

New York Primary: big wins in the Big Apple for Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton

New York Primary: big wins in the Big Apple for Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton quicken their stride towards the presidential nomination on the back of convincing Republican and Democratic victories in primary ballots in New York.

For both these would-be nominees, New York was vital. Trump needed a strong haul of the state's convention delegates if he was to put a spanner in the wheel of his rival, Texas Senator Ted Cruz; and Clinton needed to win convincingly, if she was to throw off her dogged rival, Vermont Senator Bernie Sander, who had whipped her in the previous seven state primary and caucus contests.

Both New York winners also needed the psychological lift of a hometown win as a loud signal that their campaign momentum would be reinvigorated after a series of losses and missteps.

Just as important, from a political perception point of view, was the relative vote for each of Trump and Clinton.  And with more than 95 percent of the count done, they were not so far apart.

As he does, Trump will beat his chest over his 60‐point vote, compared with Clinton's 57.6 points. Clinton or a surrogate, no doubt will respond with a quip that hers slightly  lower vote share was of a vastly bigger pie – 1.7 million Democratic votes, compared  with 0.8 million Republican votes.

Within seconds of the vote closing, the Associated Press, CNN and MSNBC declared Donald Trump the winner of the Republican primary. Almost an hour passed before the first media projections that Clinton had won the Democratic primary – handily, a shade over 60 per cent with 40 per cent of vote counted. Sanders lagged with not quite 40 per cent of the vote.

Given the anticipated certainty of Trump topping the poll, a more important question was by how much he had won, because that would play directly into what has become fierce hand-to-hand combat with challenger Ted Cruz for convention delegates, and more importantly their loyalty in the event of a brokered convention.

In terms of grabbing all of New York's 95 Republican convention delegates, Trump needed more than that 50 per cent to snatch all of the state's 14 at-large delegates and to clean up in the congressional district-by-district allocation of delegates he also needed an absolute majority for the three delegates from each district and for each district in which he scores less than 50 per cent, he'd surrender a delegate to the second-placed Ohio Governor John Kasich.

And with more than 55 per cent of the vote counted, analysts were predicting that Trump would win more than 90 of the state's 95 delegate. Before the New York vote Trump led with 756 delegates, ahead of Cruz's 559 and Ohio Governor John Kasich's 144.

Still, the New York win doesn't get Trump out of the woods – he has more of a cushion, he still needs to perform strongly in upcoming state-by-state votes if he is to win the 1237 delegates required to clinch the nomination ahead of the July convention.

More importantly, he also needs show that he has overcome the failure to date of his campaign to play the local political game, to ensure that the individuals who are appointed by the party's state officials are loyal to him – and not Cruz supporters.

In victory speech, Trump was dismissive of Cruz - "We don't have much of a race any more - Senator Cruz is just about mathematically eliminated".

The detail in CNN's exit poll data was a fascinating revelation of the thinking that turbo-charged Trumps run-away win in New York – he had super majorities in all the key demographic: men (59 per cent), women (56 per cent), all age groups 30 and older, whites (59 per cent). And, perhaps surprisingly, Trump won across all educational groups: Those with high school diplomas or less (67 per cent), some college education (59 per cent), a college degree (53 per cent) and those with postgraduate degrees (50 per cent).

When Trump came out to celebrate, observers wondered if he had undergone some kind of 'I‐need‐to be‐more‐presidential' makeover - there was no promotion of his steaks or his bottled water; 'Lyin' Ted' had become 'Senator Cruz;' and his Democratic opponent, who he's taken to calling 'Crooked Hillary,' simply wasn't mentioned. Trump avoided one of his biggest wind‐up risks by not taking questions from reporters.

Entering to Frank Sinatra's New York, New York, played at the level of a sonic boom, Trump told supporters and reporters at Trump Tower in downtown Manhattan: "Nobody's gonna to mess with us [when I'm president].

"It's just incredible - guess we're close to 70 per cent, and we're gonna end at a very high level, and get a lot more delegates than anybody projected, even in their wildest dreams.

"We are gonna be so strong again, we are gonna be literally, legitimately so strong again. We don't have much of a race anymore, going by what I see on television. Senator Cruz... I've pretty much knocked the hell out of him.

"Nobody should take delegates and claim victory unless they win those delegates with voters and voting," Trump said, a reference to the delegate battle in which he has been out-foxed by Cruz.

"We're going to go into the convention, I think, as the winner. I wanna just thank everybody, I have great, great admiration and praise for the city of New York and the state of New York. I can think of nowhere I would rather have this victory! We love New York! We love New York!"

At a victory rally at the Sheraton New York, Jay-Z's Empire State of Mind faded as Clinton declared: "There's no place like home.

"We have won in every region in the country. New Yorkers, you've always had my back, and I've always tried to have yours. Today together we did it again, and I am deeply, deeply grateful.

"It is humbling that you trust me with the awesome responsibilities that await our next president, and to all the people who supported Senator Sanders, I believe that there is much more that unites us than divides us."

That last line was the long expected pitch for party unity – and a coded appeal for Sanders to surrender, which he has long said he'll not do ahead of the Democratic convention in Philadelphia in mid-July.

Of course Clinton had dipped her toe in these waters before. In 2008 as a would‐be presidential nominee, she trounced the little‐known Barack Obama in the New York primary – by a resounding 17 points.

She lost the nomination 2008 nomination to Obama, but after New York 2016, Clinton is more certain that she's on her way to a general election. You won't hear it from the Sanders campaign, but the Vermont senator pretty well cooked his presidential goose in New York.

He needed to do much better than the prospective New York delegate split with Clinton – 104/85 in Clinton's favour – if he was to seriously dent the 200‐plus delegate lead she has over him.

He didn't – and with so much good New York wind in her campaign sails, Clinton likely will be making life a bit more difficult for Sanders in upcoming contests in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and California – with its gleaming haul of 475 delegates.

Even before voting closed at 9pm local time, Texas Senator Ted Cruz conceded defeat while campaigning in Philadelphia, telling reporters: "This is the year of the outsider and I am an outsider; Bernie Sanders is an outsider."

But there were concerns about what Pennsylvania weed Cruz might have been smoking when he added: "America has always been her best when she is lying down with her back on the mat…"

Attempting to reposition himself as an outsider, as opposed to the Washington politician that he is, Ted Cruz introduced new lines to his stump speech in Philadelphia, declaring: "I'm an outsider, Bernie Sanders is an outsider. Both with the same diagnosis [of America's problems], but both with very different paths to healing. Millions of Americans have chosen one of these outsiders."

Later Cruz spoke of Ronald Reagan and John F Kennedy as outsiders. But the line of comparison that he drew for himself was with his fellow Harvard Law graduate, Barack Obama.

And then he virtually stole Obama's signature slogan, mouthing "yes we will" as opposed to Obama's "yes we can." Cruz explained: "Our sitting president ran on a slogan that should have been a great first step… It promised us, "yes we can." In his analysis "Yes we can" was a recognition of the hope that we can and should recover.

"The problem was that Barack Obama's prescriptions only led to more elitist control from Washington. Less freedom for the people."

All of which will bring some voters to consider the words of Cruz's New York colleague Peter King, who told a TV talk show as New Yorkers were voting:  "I hate Ted Cruz - I think I'll take cyanide if he got the nomination."

Some PSN functionality will be down for 2 hours tonight

Some PSN functionality will be down for 2 hours tonight

Anyone hoping to put in some late-night online gaming tonight on PSN might run into a couple of hiccups, but only while trying to access specific things.

Due to scheduled maintenance, certain features of PSN will be down tonight, April 18, from 9:30 PM PDT to 11:30 PM PDT. While signing in, playing games, and most applications will be unaffected, “you will not be able to access Account Management, PlayStation Video, and PlayStation Store during this maintenance. We apologize for any inconvenience,” Sony explains on the PlayStation forums.

“We strive to ensure that PlayStation™Network services are available at all times, but occasionally we must take PlayStation™Network offline to perform essential maintenance and implement feature enhancements. We are working hard to reduce the duration of each maintenance.”

To prevent any problems, Sony recommends, if it isn’t already the case, activating your PS4 as your accounts primary console before the maintenance begins. Doing so will ensure all of your games will remain available during the two hour period. As far as down times go, it could be much worse. That said, does this ruin your Monday night plans of surfing the PlayStation Store? Let us know in the comments. And don’t worry. It will be back soon.

Ubisoft looks to punish The Division Incursion exploit users

Ubisoft looks to punish The Division Incursion exploit users

For almost a solid week, The Division has been broken.

For almost a solid week, The Division has been broken. And while the issue still isn’t fixed, Ubisoft is showing its teeth, vowing to punish any players that take advantage of the game’s problems.

The Division’s forums, a Community Manager explains, “We are working on fixing the exploit. Obviously it is against our Code of Conduct and the team is looking into what can be done in terms of punishment for those who have exploited.”

The exploit in question is connected to the Falcon Lost Incursion, the new endgame activity added in a free update last week. Soon after it released, players found a way to glitch into the arena without spawning any enemies. Without enemies to fight, players then simply walk up to the non-functional boss, in this case an APC, deal damage until it’s destroyed, and then claim the loot. In all, the process can be repeated multiple times with very little effort, leading many players to now have maxed out gear.

The exploit is so universal at this point, players have reported being kicked from groups for not using it and feeling compelled to do so just to keep up in regards to the PvP-centric endgame activity, the Dark Zone.

Have you used the exploit in The Division? What do you think of Ubisoft punishing the people that have? Let us know in the comments.

The Japanese Internet Reacts To Scarlett Johansson In Ghost In The Shell

The Japanese Internet Reacts To Scarlett Johansson In Ghost In The Shell

Last week, the world got its first look at Scarlett Johansson as Major Kusanagi in Hollywood’s upcoming Ghost in the Shell movie.

movie. The decision has been controversial in the West, and here is what some, certainly not all, of the folks online in Japan are saying.

The decision to cast Johansson as Motoko Kusanagi, an augmented-cybernetic Japanese woman, has led to whitewashingcriticism. The movie’s producers even consideredmaking the film’s white actors look more Asian via CG special effects. Yikes.

Via threads on Japan’s biggest bulletin board 2ch ( here, hereand here) and My Game News Flash , one of Japan’s biggest game blogs, below is a cross-section collection of some of the comments floating around Japanese cyberspace.

A couple of things to unpack. While My Game News Flash writes that there has largely been indifference in Japan to the decision to have a white actor play Kusanagi, do keep in mind, these comments should ultimately be seen as representative of the individuals who made them, so your mileage might vary. Another thing to keep in mind is that many Asian people living in Asia might have a different perspective on race issues than those living in the West. Also, opinions of the Japanese internet might not reflect society’s at large, but regardless, here we go.

“This is wrong lol”

“Seems authentic.”

“I can definitely say that the one thing they’re more true to than I thought they’d be is the hairstyle lol.”

“The gap between Japan and abroad is interesting. Japan: A white person is ok, right? Abroad: We won’t forgive white-washing, cast an Asian person.”

“Well, then, who as a Japanese person (an Asian) would be good?”

“Japanese people don’t really care, and that’s really depressing.”

“White people rule Hollywood.”

“I laughed at them casting a foreigner as a Japanese character.”

“She looks way too kind.”

“I’m not going to watch this, so whatever.”

“There aren’t high-level Japanese actresses, so this can’t be helped…”

“M’kay…”

“Twenty years earlier, this would have been Milla Jovovich.”

“I have no idea why people are complaining this much.”

“At this year’s Academy Awards, there was criticism that about all the white people, so perhaps this outrage is linked to that.”

“Well then, how about Rinko Kikuchi?”

“I hate Scarlett Johansson because she appeared in that movie that made fun of Japan. She’s ugly, but she might have a face that white people like.”

“Taylor Swift would have been better.”

“For the Japanese dub, please use a proper voice actress. Without fail.”

“Yep, this is a Hollywood film.”

“There would be controversy no matter who starred.”

“If it’s going to be an Asian in Hollywood, then it would be someone like Lucy Liu. Scarlett Johansson is fine.”

“I guess it’s that white people are taking work from Asian people.”

“It’s unfortunate but only natural because there aren’t many Japanese (actors) who can speak English.”

“Scarlett Johansson looks terrible with black hair. It doesn’t suit her at all.”

“Then, who would be better?”

“ Ko Shibasaki, perhaps. That’s the only one who came to mind.”

“I thought it was ok that they didn’t use a Japanese person.”

“The original manga is quietly saying, ‘Please make this anime only.'”

“Putting race on a cyborg…”

“A Japanese actor wouldn’t sell the film.”

“Don’t care too much about this image. My concern is the substance.”

“You know it’s going to end up totally different, so who cares about the casting.”

“I wasn’t even looking forward to this movie in the first place.”

“If only they had put Rinko Kikuchi as Motoko Kusanagi, there wouldn’t be any issue.”

“This stinks of a B movie.”

“Even though in the Attack on Titan manga, the characters were foreigners, the movie version was all Japanese people, so I’m not going to complain.”

Microsoft develops smartphone case that acts as secondary touchscreen

Microsoft develops smartphone case that acts as secondary touchscreen

Representational image: Thinkstock
Technology giant Microsoft and Austrian researchers have developed “FlexCase” — a prototype smartphone that acts as a secondary e-ink display.

Microsoft and the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria created the device that can act as an extended touchscreen to mobile devices and can power the device, www.techtimes.com reported. The smartphone case prototype can be flexed, tapped and twisted to control the main display.

The “FlexCase” works similar to YotaPhone — the world’s first smartphone that had two screens released in 2013. It had an e-ink display on the back and a regular LCD front screen. “FlexCase” allows users to interact with their phone in many ways. Its cover can be used as an extended visual clipboard that makes searching and typing easier.

By simply bending the cover forward or backward, users can easily flip pages, zoom in and out, navigate pages and even rotate maps.

Everyday motion can generate enough energy to be converted to electricity. The piezoelectric effect (push or pull) can be of use within multiple applications, including electronic frequency generation, detection and production of sound. The same principle is applied on the FlexCase prototype that uses piezoelectricity current to power the device. By allowing users to stretch, compress, flex, tap and twist the cover, an appropriate amount of energy is being applied that generates an electrical charge to operate the device.

The “FlexCase” was scheduled to be presented at the “Computer-Human Interaction Conference” in May in California.

Bill Gates says US needs limits on covert email searches

Bill Gates says US needs limits on covert email searches

(Image: Reuters)
Bill Gates said that no one was an 鈥渁bsolutist鈥 on either side of the digital privacy debate, but the co-founder of Microsoft聽said he supports his company鈥檚 lawsuit against the US government seeking the freedom to tell customers when federal agencies have sought their data.

“There probably are some cases where (the government) should be able to go in covertly and get information about a company鈥檚 email,” Gates said at a Reuters Newsmaker event in Washington.

“But the position Microsoft is taking in this suit is that it should be extraordinary and it shouldn鈥檛 be a matter of course that there is a gag order automatically put in,鈥 he said in an interview with Reuters Editor-in-Chief Stephen Adler.

The lawsuit, filed last week in federal court in Microsoft’s home town of Seattle, argues that the government is violating the U.S. Constitution by preventing Microsoft from notifying thousands of customers about government requests for their emails and other documents, sometimes indefinitely.

The move comes as rival Apple聽is locked in a showdown with the U.S. government over access to an iPhone belonging to one of the killers in the December shooting in San Bernardino, California.

Gates said more collaboration between law enforcement and privacy advocates would help determine which 鈥渓egislative framework … strikes the perfect balance鈥 on government access to private data.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think there are any absolutists who think the government should be able to get everything or the government should be able to get nothing,鈥 Gates, 60, said.

The man who co-founded Microsoft in 1975 and is still held in reverence by the technology world made waves in February when he appeared to distance himself from Apple in its legal fight with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, but later clarified his comments and said that headlines suggesting he supported the FBI鈥檚 position were inaccurate.

The foundation, where Gates works day to day, has focused attention in recent months on the Zika outbreak, which has been linked to thousands of suspected cases of microcephaly, a rare birth defect, in Brazil and is affecting large parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The World Health Organization declared the outbreak an international health emergency on Feb. 1. Gates said the foundation would be contributing funds to aid in the Zika fight, but did not say how much.

Private sector and governments need to work together to quickly roll out products to combat Zika and other mosquito-borne diseases, Gates said.

“Zika is a tough one,” he said. “There are potential solutions. They won’t come soon enough to avoid some problems in the entire hemisphere.”

Volvo Trucks enlists world's strongest man to tug 1.65 million pounds

Volvo Trucks enlists world's strongest man to tug 1.65 million pounds

The world's strongest man is, as the accolade implies, a strong man.

His name is Magnus Samuelsson and he's best known for reaching the World's Strongest Man finals 10 times—that's more than anyone else. Standing almost 7 feet tall, the Swede won the competition in 1998 and can dead lift 771 pounds.

He's also a bit of a car buff, having raced in the 2010 Rally Sweden.

As a result, Samuelsson seemed like a natural to help Volvo Trucks break a new record for the heaviest weight towed across 100 meters by a stock truck you can buy in a showroom (assuming you possess the proper commercial driving license in your jurisdiction).

But anyone would need a little help to tug 750 metric tons, which works out to around 1.65 million lb.

That's a lot of weight. A whole heck of a lot of weight.

So, Volvo prepared its FH16 hauler equipped with crawler gears to tug that much weight 100 meters.

As the 6-minute video implies, this is no small feat. What's perhaps most impressive is that the FH16 is a standard, regular production truck. Most recently redesigned in 2012, it is rated at 750 horsepower and, crucially for hauling, more than 2,600 pound-feet of torque.

From Software Shows Off New Dark Souls 3 Gameplay

From Software Shows Off New Dark Souls 3 Gameplay

In just under two months (less for Japanese gamers), From Software will conclude its epic and brutally difficult trilogy with Dark Souls 3 .

image description

. Although many fans will be sad to see it go, From and series creator Hidetaka Miyazakihave also made sure that those players have enough time to soak Dark Souls 3 in by releasing, like they have today, new pieces of gameplay footage and awesome trailers.

The latest footage for Dark Souls 3 comes by way of a recent livestream, in which the Japanese developers at From Software walked players through some of the game’s essential pieces. The livestream focused specifically on combat and random enemy encounters, showing how players will have to be on their toes if they want to survive in the land of the Lord of Cinder.

Admittedly, since the livestream was in Japanese it’s hard to get the full picture, but the footage is impressive nonetheless. With the power of current-gen platforms and the PC at their fingertips, From Software has been able to push the Souls serieseven further. Now, the gothic fantasy aesthetic can look both horrific and beautiful.

Check out a few highlights from the Dark Souls 3 livestream thanks to the fine folks at DualShockers:

If nothing else, the Dark Souls 3 footage proves that enemies will be just as devious as in past games. Unpredictable patterns and surprise attacks are two signature traits of the series, and they appear to be plentiful in the new game.

However, alongside new enemies players will have access to new move sets, abilities, and the new Thief class. While Dark Souls’ spiritual spin-off Bloodborne focused weapon-based variety when it came to combat, Dark Souls 3 is continuing the main series’ theme of classes. That is, players will be able to choose from a wealth of classes and statsin order to fit their particular play style.

And lest we forget, Dark Souls 3 will feature plenty of nasty bosses, which are sure to give even the most hardened veterans a little bit of trouble. The Lord of Cinder looks like a particularly challenging foe, provided players actually get to face off with him at some point.

That being said, we don’t expect it will be long before speedrunners are racing through Dark Souls 3 and even finding that they can beat the game without ever getting hit. The beauty of the Dark Souls series is that it creates a culture focused on mastering and understanding every aspect of the game, and we can’t wait to see what players uncover in this final chapter.

Dark Souls 3 releases April 12, 2016 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One in North America. Japanese gamers can play the game on March 24th.

Bungie on the ropes: Destiny faces real crisis over matchmaking and failure to announce next expansion
Monday, 25 January 2016 16:48 GMT By Patrick Garratt
Really, really not good.

destiny_the_taken_king_new_jan_2016_6

Destinyis facing its first real crisis as a persistent, long-term project, with its core community in revolt over skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) and a failure to announce the next major content pack.

Many outlets, both professional and not, have vented frustration with Bungie in the last week, pointing at a failure to communicate an introduction of skill-based matchmaking at The Taken King’s launch as a tipping point for many.

We have seen in recent days articles published like this from The Verge, telling people they should quit the game outright. Even the hardiest of Destiny supporters, such as PlanetDestiny, have reacted with dismay to Bungie’s treating Destiny’s community as “some science experiment,” and failing to be “open, honest and communicative” over matchmaking changes last year.

This is not Destiny’s finest hour.

Player videos like this show just how badly SBMM has affected Destiny’s PvP. Teleporting and failure to detect damage are commonplace because of lag.

The discontent surrounding SBMM is warranted, in my opinion. Bungie has been talking about addressing lag in PvP for many monthsin relation to lag-switching – a cheating technique by which a player disrupts the upload from their console, freezing their character on an opponent’s screen while being able to continue to play locally – but the switch to SBMM was, Bungie said this week, down to player complaints of lop-sided matches as matchmaking was previously based on location. People were getting a fair fight in terms of connection, but were sometimes facing opponents way above their skill level and getting crushed as a result.

If you want to see a proper timeline of the introduction of SBMM and Bungie employees denying it had been implemented, watch this PlanetDestiny videofrom around 26.30. Bungie admitted this weekthat SBMM started going live in October and was launched on all playlists in December. The reason given for not telling players about it, despite the fact it was blatantly obvious the system had changed, was that Bungie needed “unbiased” data from the switch.

I mean, let’s be clear here. This looks like a flat-out lie at worst, and terrible internal communication at best. Regardless of the fact this decision has added a nonsense level of lag across Destiny’s entire PvP suite, you have to be honest with your players. It’s the only way in service gaming. When people are investing thousands of hours, hundreds of dollars of real money and endless vocal support, it is not acceptable to behave this way. In admitting it had forced SBMM on Destiny’s PvP, Bungie promised to be “more transparent” about changes in the future, but the truth is that you can’t expect people to remain loyal to the game if you’re dishonest. It doesn’t work.

And then we have PvE. The Taken King (TTK),Destiny’s last content update, launched last September. It was an amazing additionto an already incredible game, but any serious player has long since burned through everything it has to offer. End-gamers are now locked into a cycle of running the King’s Fall raid and hitting the weekly challenges to get 320 loot, but an insistence to keep the year-one raids and Prison of Elders at pre-TTK levels means there really is nothing else to do. Have you tried killing Skolas now you’re 310-plus? It’s almost as demoralising as beating him at level 34.I’ve already written about the current dearth of PvE content,so I won’t waffle. Suffice it to say that we seriously need more, and rumour of “Destiny 2″ being kicked out of 2016isn’t exactly helping.

This is a bad situation, but it’s recoverable. I’m sure it’ll all blow over when the announcement of new content finally comes, but headlines like, “With ‘Destiny’ In Crisis, ‘The Division’ Has A Unique Opportunity To Steal Its Players,”Eurogamer saying the game has become “stagnant”and a subredditfull of howling addicts are not what Destiny needs.

Dear Bungie. This, or some approximation of it, is what you have to do.

Turn off mandatory, playlist-wide SBMM immediately. This was an offensive decision to virtually the entire Destiny community and it was a mistake, regardless of the honesty surrounding its communication. You’ve angered pretty much everyone with a keyboard and an inclination to talk about Destiny on the internet. No one has any problem with SBMM as long as it’s optional, but forcing all PvP players into an SBMM system is game-breaking. Switch it off. Announce the next content pack. The Taken King’s PvE is over. Neither of the year-one raids or Prison of Elders is relevant now, and we haven’t had anything new for over four months. Show PvE players some kind of road-map before they quit for good. Small updates like SLR and “events” for Hallowe’en and Valentine’s Day are not enough to keep people playing. Do something or they’ll stop and they may well not return. Be more communicative about both the current game and the future . Both in terms of PvE and PvP. This is a blanket complaint you’ve promised to rectify. Let it be so.

Writing this article was far too easy. All we want to do is say good things about a shooter that’s kept millions of people enthralled for more than a year. Less of the minus, Bungie. Let’s get back to the plus.
